Why is strength training essential for preseason?

Building strength isn’t just about lifting heavy—it’s about creating a resilient body that can handle the demands of sport and life.

✅ Boosts Power & Performance – Stronger muscles mean faster sprints, higher jumps, and better control.
✅ Prevents Injuries – Strength stabilizes joints and protects against common strains & sprains.
✅ Enhances Recovery – A strong body recovers faster, keeping you fresh all season.

🏋️‍♂️ Don’t wait for injuries to slow you down—start preseason strength training now! Need guidance? Our physio team can help! Book an assessment today.

We are entering the time of year where people start to ask us about Preseason Training. What is it and why should we be doing it?

Preseason training is the essential training you complete before your main sport season begins. It should be approximately 12 week or longer, and should consist of some Cardiovascular training, strength training and sport-specific skills training.

Skipping this phase or approaching it poorly can lead to poor performance, early-season fatigue, and a higher risk of injury. Here’s why preseason training is essential:

1️⃣ Build Strength & Resilience
Preseason training allows athletes to strengthen muscles, tendons, and ligaments, making them more resilient to the demands of their sport. Targeted strength training improves power, endurance, and stability, reducing the likelihood of strains, sprains, and overuse injuries.

2️⃣ Improve Fitness & Stamina
Building cardiovascular fitness and muscular endurance before the season starts ensures that athletes can perform at their best from game one. Gradually increasing intensity helps the body adapt and reduces the risk of early-season fatigue.

3️⃣ Reduce Injury Risk
Many injuries occur when athletes go from a low level of activity in the off-season to high-intensity competition too quickly. Preseason training helps the body adapt gradually, reducing the risk of soft tissue injuries, muscle imbalances, and joint stress.

4️⃣ Enhance Speed, Agility & Coordination
Sport-specific drills improve reaction time, agility, and movement efficiency, allowing athletes to perform at a higher level while reducing awkward movements that can lead to injury.

5️⃣ Mental Preparation & Confidence
Preseason is not just about physical readiness; it's also a time to mentally prepare for the challenges ahead. Training builds confidence, discipline, and a competitive mindset, setting athletes up for a strong start to the season.

6️⃣ Get Ahead of Minor Aches & Pains
Addressing small niggles early prevents them from turning into major injuries. Preseason is the perfect time for a physiotherapy check-up to identify and correct any imbalances or weaknesses before the season begins.

📢 Are you ready for the season? Our team can help you build strength, prevent injuries, and get game-ready!
