SPOONS!!!! π₯π₯π₯π₯π₯π₯
How many do you have today? Theory would suggest that we wake up with an endless amount....
But, imagine starting your day with only a certain number of spoons....let's say 10....(round numbers are good! π) ..those 10 spoons need to get us through the day.....the entire day!
The spoons represent how much 'energy' we have, be it physical or emotional to function throughout the day!
For neurodivergent people these spoons can be impacted in a number of ways.
Spoons are used up by executive functioning skills, communication or social skills, sensory processing and so on, and can be impacted by insufficient or poor quality of sleep, sickness, changes in routines, too many things scheduled in...and when they are spent, that's it!!!!
But what if we learnt how to put some spoons back during the day?
What if....we learnt how, or were able, to co-regulate with our goslings to make sure that the spoons don't run out?
Then they'd make it through the day....right?
So next time your gosling looks like they're frustrated, holding in their emotions, masking, people pleasing, covering their ears, moving around in their seat, avoiding demands and expectations, think about their spoons 'for'Β them...
Is it time to say no to that extra invite this week, or a trip to the beach?
Is it time to create a schedule for them, even with them, to help decrease their anxiety by increasing the certainty around them?
Is it time to sit down with their teacher and explain what spoons 'are' and how your gosling needs help (co-regulation) throughout the day to ensure they have enough spoons to make it through!
Maybe they have more social spoons and less executive functioning spoons, more communication spoons and less sensory processing spoons....we're not all made the same!
So next time you're gosling is struggling, think about how many spoons they have left?
And, what needs to change?
