What’s the difference between a personal trainer, an exercise physiologist and a physiotherapist? Aren’t the all the same? πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ

Well, the short answer is NO!

As an Accredited Exercise Physiologist (AEP) certified by Exercise & Sports Science Australia (ESSA), I'm here to provide personalised, safe, and effective exercise interventions & lifestyle coaching.

But you might be wondering, what exactly is an Exercise Physiologist?

According to ESSA, AEPs are highly qualified allied health professionals armed with the knowledge, skills, & competencies to design, deliver, and assess safe and effective exercise interventions. We specialise in assisting individuals with acute, sub-acute, or chronic medical conditions, injuries, or disabilities.

Our primary goal as AEPs is to leverage exercise as a powerful tool for preventing and managing chronic diseases, injuries, and disabilities.

BUT, how does an Accredited Exercise Physiologist differ from other professionals like physiotherapists or personal trainers?

πŸ‘‰ Physiotherapists: They're also university qualified & proficient in assessing, diagnosing, & managing a wide range of injuries, chronic conditions, & disabilities. While some physiotherapists may have exercise science knowledge, their primary focus isn't exercise prescription.

πŸ‘‰ Personal Trainers: Typically, personal trainers hold a Certificate III or Certificate IV in Fitness & primarily work with 'healthy individuals' looking to enhance their general health and fitness. They are not focused on clinical treatment for medical conditions or injuries.

When you engage with an Accredited Exercise Physiologist you can trust that your exercise program will be meticulously tailored to your fitness level, needs and ability.

And, when you work with a Women's Health Exercise Physiologist, who also has the skills and qualifications of a personal trainer, you will be expertly support you with an women's health injuries or conditions that you may have, while also reaping the benefits of a skilled exercise professional who will help you with your fitness and lifestyle goals. πŸ’ͺ

Are you postpartum, perimenopausal, or maybe both? πŸ€”

I know the struggles many women face with the fitness industry, trying to safely & effectively exercise as a mum.

The postpartum phase is a rollercoaster, marked by the miraculous healing of your body post-pregnancy, sleepless nights, & a symphony of hormones playing havoc. It's a time when self-care can easily take a backseat amidst the demands of motherhood.

Many of us face birth injuries, abdominal separation, & the woes of aching backs, wrists, & knees. Jumping straight back into an intense workout routine might not be the answer; in fact, it could be a recipe for future setbacks.

Then, just as you think you've conquered the post-natal challenges, the subtle transition to perimenopause begins. For those who've welcomed children in their mid to late 30s or later, this phase can catch you off guard. Fatigue, brain fog, joint pain, & anxiety might not be just the result of a busy life as a mum – perimenopause can start as early as 35.

The truth is, many professionals, whether in medicine or fitness, might not fully understand how to support women during these transformative years. But fear not! My mission is crystal clear – to provide the understanding and support you deserve.

Because, let's face it, the stages of our lives aren't neatly compartmentalized. Perimenopause could be knocking at your door while you're still navigating the early years of motherhood. It's a lot to handle, and I get it.

So, whether you're knee-deep in parenting or gracefully entering your late 30s or early 40s, I want you to know that there's a support system that truly comprehends the nuances of your ever-changing, amazing body.

My goal is to help you feel strong, healthy, and absolutely in love with the skin you're in!

Knowledge is power, and I will be sharing with you a wealth of information, focusing on the post-natal and perimenopausal years, to empower you to love living in your amazing body as you navigate the journey of motherhood at all stage. Stay tuned! πŸ’ͺ

🌸 Hello Beautiful! 🌸

It's been a while, hasn't it? Almost 5 months I believe. In this time, I've taken a step back, reflected, and allowed myself the space to heal.

Today, I want to share a bit more about my journey and why I'm so passionate about what I do (yes, despite being of social media I am still working with women at all stages of motherhood)

I'm Jody, a Women’s Health Exercise Physiologist and MumSafeℒ️ trainer, with over 23 years of experience in health, fitness, and wellbeing. Motherhood has been my greatest adventure, but it came with its fair share of challenges. From undiagnosed post-natal depression, eating disorders and prolapse to anxiety, panic attacks, and adrenal fatigue just name a few.

I'm also a single mum to two incredible kids, one navigating high school now. Life threw me a curveball with the end of a marriage and a challenging 4-year separation and divorce. And just when I thought I couldn't deal with any more, perimenopause arrived, bringing a whole new set of hurdles.

2023 was undeniably my most challenging year, yet through it all, my two young humans gave me a reason to keep going. They are my anchor, and I cherish the moments, no matter how tough.

After some much-needed rest, reflection, and healing over the past 5 months, I've gained clarity on my mission with Body Empowerment with Jody:

✨To empower post-natal and perimenopausal women to love living in their body through movement, exercise, and lifestyle.✨

If you're a post-natal or perimenopausal woman seeking empowerment, join me on this adventure. Let's embrace movement, exercise, and lifestyle changes together. Your journey is unique, and I'm here to help you love living in your body.

Stay tuned for more updates, tips, and inspiration. Together, we've got this! πŸ’ͺ

This statement really hit me when I read it again the other day, while reading an email from Taryn Watson from FitRight.

It hit me hard because I realised how true it was.

And, how many women avoid exercise because of issues they suffer with, like incontinence and prolapse, or simply don't prioritise their health and find a way to keep moving, but are putting themselves at risk of chronic health conditions, such as heart disease and osteoporosis, or mental health conditions, including anxiety and depression.

But on reflection, the exercise and movement advice women with pelvic floor dysfunction and prolapse have received over the years from professionals like physiotherapists and exercise professionals has been very conservative, and though most likely coming from a place of care and protection, has possibly contributed to this issue.

✨Exercise is vital to a woman’s overall health

It is important that if you have had a baby you invest in a review with a Women’s Health Physiotherapist. They will help you understand how you can best exercise to keep yourself safe but also fit and healthy.

If symptoms you are experiencing are causing you to avoid or fear exercise, reach out for professional help.

Several exercises previously considered β€˜not pelvic floor safe’ don’t have any evidence to back up that this is the case, and are good for other aspects of your health.

✨Exercise is so important for a woman’s mental health

If you can’t live without a particular type of exercise, it’s important to work with your women’s health physiotherapist and exercise professional to find a way to gradually rebuild back to what you enjoy or find alternatives that give you the same feeling that those activities do.

Given my personal experience with pelvic floor dysfunction, specifically a prolapse, and the way I manage my own condition, I have always based my exercise decisions on how I am feeling, and how other lifestyle factors are impacting my body on that day.

And, though more conservative in the early days of my business, I now use this approach with my clients.

Because, I have continued to read the research, listen to the experts, and have discussions with the Women’s Health Physiotherapists I am affiliated with and those that support my clients.

I listen to what my clients want to achieve.

I meet them where they are at on the day, and we adjust and modify exercises depending on how their body responded at our last session and how it is responding on the day.

And I ensure we, my client and I, work closely with a Women’s Health Physiotherapist, our eyes on the inside, to provide feedback in relation to what has changed.

It is the approach I and many other allied health professionals are now taking with our clients and patients, because, we want you to life your best and healthiest life, for as long as possible, and keep you strong both inside and out! 🧑

Our bodies go through many changes and challenges during pregnancy, childbirth and the postpartum period. From the outside looking in, no one would know just how many things a mum is dealing with both in the early days, and as her children grow.

However, when a woman feels ready to return to exercise, it is crazy how many exercise professionals don’t ask a single question in relation to this journey she has been on.

And, even if you’re children are no longer little, the journey your body has been on can have long lasting impacts on your physical and psychological health, and overtime can contribute to other health & medical conditions.

Before starting an exercise program, I feel it’s important that every woman has the opportunity to feel heard and understood by the exercise professional they are working with and trusting in.

✨So, has your exercise professional asked you about:

πŸ‘‰Your pregnancy journey and your birth story? As this journey will impact you in physical and emotional ways that you may not even be aware of.

πŸ‘‰Your pelvic floor and abdominal separation? So that they can ensure you rebuild and rehabilitate from the inside out and keep you safe and injury free.

πŸ‘‰Your menstrual cycle? As your cycle is a reflection of your health, and will impact your energy levels, your strength and your endurance.

πŸ‘‰What you are struggling with most, and what is challenging you on a daily basis? So they really understand what you need most right now and prescribe exercise and movement that is safe, effective and nourishing for your postpartum body.

If your trainer or exercise professional hasn’t asked you any of these questions, do they really know you and how best to support you on the next stage of your health, fitness and wellbeing journey? πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ

And I am one of those annoying exercise professionals encouraging women over the age of 40 to move more, especially during this stage of life.

The theme for this year’s World Menopause Day is cardiovascular disease. ❀️

Did you know that cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a leading cause of illness and death among Australian women?

And a 2016 study estimated that about 14% of Australian women aged 45–74 (522,000 women) were at high absolute risk of a future CVD event over the following 5 years. A further 2.9% (108,000 women) were at moderate risk.

πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ But was does this have to do with menopause and exercise?

Because exercise is so important in the prevention of chronic diseases such as cardiovascular disease and this phase of life impacts our cardiovascular system due to the changes in our hormones. That means it impacts our blood pressure and our cholesterol levels.

The changes that occur during the perimenopause and menopause years also impact our insulin levels, as hormonal changes lead to increased insulin resistance, and therefore increase the risk of diabetes.

So, what type of exercise will support the prevention of cardiovascular disease?

Aerobic exercise! So walking, swimming, dancing, cycling, and climbing stairs all recommended as suitable aerobic exercise activities to support the reduction of risk.

Further, weight-bearing aerobic exercises can help stimulate bone growth and maintain bone density. So important for preventing osteoporosis!

And engaging in regular aerobic exercise will trigger the release of endorphins, the natural mood elevators, and stress reducers, which in turn will improve sleep quality by promoting relaxation.

Finally, for those women who are struggling with anxiety and depression, studies have shown that a program including both aerobic and resistance training, resulted in the greatest benefit on mental health as well as improving general health.

So, get those walking shoes on and get out and move! πŸšΆβ€β™€οΈ

🌼 Embracing the Journey of Perimenopause 🌼

Perimenopause, often called the menopausal transition, is a natural and beautiful stage in a woman's life. It typically occurs in the years leading up to menopause, and it's a time of transformation. 🌸

During perimenopause, your body undergoes significant hormonal and physical changes as it prepares for the next chapter. This phase often starts in your 40s but can begin in your late 30s or even earlier, varying from person to person, and lasts from 4 to 10 years.

Your ovaries gradually reduce their production of oestrogen and progesterone, causing fluctuations in hormones. This may lead to irregular menstrual cycles and a variety of other symptoms, including mood swings, brain fog, incontinence, hot flushes, and muscle and joint pain.

These changes also impact your overall health, affecting your heart health and bone density. You might experience weight gain, changes in skin and tissue, and vaginal dryness, alongside emotional symptoms like night sweats, changes in libido, and sleep disturbances.

So, what can you do to support your health during perimenopause? πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ

πŸ‘‰ Tune into your body and emotions, noting any changes you're experiencing. Reach out to a women's health doctor or specialist if needed. 🩺

πŸ‘‰ If your family has a history of heart conditions, osteopenia, or osteoporosis, ensure regular health check-ups to stay proactive. ❀️

πŸ‘‰ Prioritise self-care by making lifestyle choices that promote optimal health and wellbeing. This includes exercise, a balanced diet, quality sleep, and effective stress management. πŸ‹οΈβ€β™€οΈπŸπŸ’€

It's important to remember that every woman's perimenopause experience is unique. Some may breeze through it with minimal symptoms, while others may find it more challenging. Let's support and empower each other on this incredible journey. 🧑
