NAIDOC Week 2025 | The Next Generation: Strength, Vision & Legacy

Our team gathered together today in a yarning circle, on Whadjuk Noongar country to celebrate NAIDOC week and to learn, reflect and honour First Nations people.

We were privileged to hear from an incredible guest speaker and storyteller Penne Pickett, who shared the powerful stories of her family members. The insights she shared of strength and wisdom helps us walk forward with greater understanding.

The 2025 theme The Next Generation: Strength Vision and Legacy honours 50 years of elevating First Nations voices and highlights the bright future being shaped by the leaders of tomorrow. It reminds us that the legacy of elders and ancestors lives on through the strength and wisdom of young people families and communities.

As a disability service provider, we are proud to stand with First Nations peoples, participants, families, workers and community members who continue to lead with resilience cultural pride and a deep connection to country.

We recognise and respect the ongoing journey towards justice inclusion and equity this week, and every week we remain committed to listening learning and working together towards a future built on respect and opportunity for all.

Celebrating 20 years of dedication
We’re delighted to celebrate 20 years of service from our wonderful Accounts Payable Officer Sandra.

For two decades, Sandra has been a steady and friendly force behind the scenes, keeping our accounts in line while bringing a smile to the office. Sandra says she loves the work, the friends she’s made and supporting people. She has seen many positive changes over the years and her work has evolved significantly during her career, transitioning from manually filing hard copy invoices to managing them with modern computer programs.

And her advice for new starters is, "take it slowly, learn to walk before you run and don’t be afraid to ask for help".

When she’s not keeping our books balanced, she’s off cruising the world with her husband, dining out, enjoying time with her grandchildren and planning her next holiday. Retirement? Not on her radar just yet, as she’s having too much fun!

And a little birdie told us it’s her birthday today too! Happy Birthday Sandra!

Thank you for your loyalty and your incredible contribution over the past 20 years. Here’s to many more!

On Sunday the people we support joined 40,000 thousand others for the HBF Run for a Reason and what a day it was. From start to finish our people showed strength, spirit and smiles that lit up the course.

We’re so proud of every person who ran, walked, rolled and cheered. This event isn’t just about crossing the finish line, it’s about inclusion, connection and celebrating every ability.

A huge shout out and thank you to our Identitywa workers, volunteers, families and supporters who made it all possible.

Swipe through to see some fun moments from the day.

At Identitywa we believe everyone deserves a home that fits their life and that’s why we’re so excited to be building brand new, accessible homes throughout the metro area in partnership with Jarra https://jarra.com.au/. This collaboration is about our shared values to support people with disability, while promoting choice and a sense of belonging.

Recently our team along with some of the families we support visited the construction site in Belmont to see the progress up close – and the excitement is literally building!

Walls have gone up, wide doorways have taken shape and open plan living spaces are already giving us a sense of how these homes will feel - welcoming, practical, safe and secure.

It’s one thing to see plans on paper but to walk through the spaces and hear the excitement from participants and their families is something special. The homes are more than just buildings. They are about independence, dignity and comfort.

From accessible kitchens and ensuites to thoughtful touches like sensory friendly lighting and private outdoor alfresco areas, every detail has been carefully designed with the person in mind. It’s wonderful to see the vision taking shape and even more special to share the moment with future families.

We are committed to designing forever homes that foster community connection and will accommodate the long-term requirements of the people living in them. We can’t wait to welcome everyone home soon.

Welcome Pope Leo XIV
Identitywa extends a heartfelt welcome to His Holiness Pope Leo XIV as he begins his sacred ministry. As a Catholic organisation supporting people with disability, we are inspired by the Pope’s commitment to compassion, inclusion and the dignity of every person.

This significant event is celebrated not only within the Catholic Church but also by the broader Christian community and the world. Archbishop Timothy Costelloe highlighted Cardinal Prevost's approachability and listening skills, honed during his years as an Augustinian missionary in Peru. These qualities, along with his extensive experience, are expected to guide the Church through its future challenges and opportunities.

Pope Leo XIV, the first Pope from the United States, brings a rich background in theology and canon law, with a history of service in various roles. His election is seen as a continuation of the path set by recent Popes, focusing on unity and service to the wider Christian family. The importance of unity in diversity, was echoed by Pope Leo XIV in his first remarks, which centred on peace and moving forward together.
We are looking forward to Pope Leo XIV’s spiritual leadership marked by peace, unity, and a deepening of the Gospel message. Archbishop Costelloe will attend the Pope's installation in Rome.

We have officially opened three new accessible homes in East Cannington, marking an important step in our mission to enhance housing opportunities for people with disability.

We were joined by the housemates, their families, support workers and community members to celebrate this wonderful occasion. Special thanks to the Identitywa Housing Team, Archbishop of Perth Most Reverend Timothy Costelloe, City of Canning Mayor Mr. Patrick Hall and Fr Tony Moussa of St Charbel Maronite Church for being part of this special event.

These homes are built with sustainability and energy-efficiency in mind, offering spacious, accessible living spaces, large bedrooms with ensuites and smart tech automation for added comfort and safety.
