If you’ve read the latest NDIS guidelines on how supports are described in plans, one thing is becoming clearer by the day: Stated supports are limiting flexibility — and sometimes, rendering funding completely unusable. We unpacked this in this week’s episode of OT Unplugged, but here’s the...

The introduction of Support Needs Assessments (SNA) within the NDIS has sparked significant discussion, particularly given the pace at which the NDIA appears to be progressing. In a recent episode of OT Unplugged, we sat down with Muriel Cummins to unpack the latest developments, concerns and what t

“More consistent funding” is giving “cookie cutter” plans, and failing to recognise two people with the same diagnosis will inevitability present differently and require different levels of support

The NDIA has released an approach to market (via a Request for Tender) for support need assessment tools for adults (16 years and over) and an industry consultation process (via a Request for Information) about how best to understand support needs for children and specific kinds of support funded by...

Another blow for allied health. So many benefits for adults and children through the engagement and experience of art and music. This new change will make it difficult for many providers to remain sustainable

NDIS Minister Bill Shorten has flagged changes to the way music and art therapy are funded, raising concerns about access for participants.

As an OT working across both hospital and community NDIS teams, this feels like a huge blow for choice and control, and options to transition safely from hospital to home 😔

On Friday 22 November the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) released new information on Short Term Accommodation (STA) and Respite. The NDIA’s information provides a broad overview of eligibility for STA and Respite and exclusions with further detail to be provided when the agency’s operational guidelines are released in December.

The NDIA has stated that STA and Respite will be available to participants and informal supports but will not apply to those in Supported Independent Living (SIL) or living alone. Other restrictions on STA Funding mean transport to and from STA cannot be covered by this budget and it cannot be used for holidays and tourist travel. You can find information on the changes here: https://buff.ly/4eKRxdB

PWDA is concerned that these changes will reduce the flexibility and choice and control of participants over how they participate in their communities and achieve their goals.

PWDA Board Director Daniel Flynn emphasised the obligation of the NDIA to uphold the rights of people with disability to participate in their communities.

"PWDA is concerned about uncertainty in funding decisions and subsequent harm to participants while the sector awaits the release of the operational guidelines,” Daniel said.

PWDA is seeking clarification on how participants can utilise STA and Respite and have access to support workers when travelling or away from home, especially for those without informal supports.
