🍂 TA Shout-out! 🍂

Big kudos to Jess (TA) for supporting a client to build social communication and retell skills during a community session.

Using the client’s interest in rock climbing, Jess helped make learning meaningful, motivating, and real-world focused 🧗‍♀️✨

You truly never know where you could end up when therapy follows curiosity and connection. 🍁

Using Bathroom Routines for Language Practice

Name items – Label what you see (toothbrush, soap, towel) and talk about what each one is used for. Builds vocabulary and understanding of function.

Action words – Model and practise verbs like wash, brush, rinse, wipe, and dry during routines. Perfect for everyday repetition.

Sequencing steps – Talk through routines in order (“First we brush our teeth, then we rinse, last we dry our face”). Supports sequencing and time words.

Following directions – Give 1–2 step instructions (“Pick up the towel,” “Turn off the tap”). Builds listening and comprehension.

Describing – Talk about texture, temperature, and colour (“The water is warm,” “The towel is soft”). Expands describing vocabulary.

Compare & contrast – Compare items (“My toothbrush is blue, yours is green”; “This towel is bigger”). Great for comparing language.

Pronouns & possessives – Use phrases like “my towel,” “your toothbrush,” and “his soap” to practise ownership and pronouns.

Role-play – Pretend to brush a doll’s teeth or wash a teddy’s hands. Encourages imaginative play and expressive language.

🌿 What Are Boundaries? 🌿

Boundaries are the invisible lines that protect our time, energy, emotions, and physical space.

They help us:
✔ Know what we’re okay with
✔ Say no when something feels wrong
✔ Say yes to what feels safe and good
✔ Build respectful, balanced relationships

✨ Think of them like a garden fence, not to shut people out, but to protect what matters inside.

Everyone’s boundaries look a little different. And that’s okay. 💛 Learning to set, hold, and respect them takes practice.

Your boundaries are valid. Your comfort matters. You don’t have to earn rest, safety, or respect.

🍂 At Autumn Therapy, we support clients and families to understand, express, and practise healthy boundaries through communication goals and support strategies.

Using Photos or Artwork for Language Practice

Guess who/what – Cover part of the photo and ask your child to guess what’s missing. Great for prediction and inferencing skills.

What happens next? – Look at a photo and imagine the next part of the story (“He’s holding a ball… what might happen next?”). Builds storytelling and future-tense language.

Feelings talk – Point to people in pictures and talk about how they might be feeling and why. Encourages empathy and emotional vocabulary.

Compare & contrast – Place two photos side by side and describe similarities and differences (“Both have animals… this one has a cat, that one has a dog”). Supports describing and comparing language.

Time talk – Use family photos to talk about past, present, and future (“Last summer we went… now we are at home… next we will…”). Helps with sequencing and time concepts.

Question game – Take turns asking and answering “who, what, where, when, why” questions about the picture. Builds comprehension and curiosity.

Caption challenge – Make up funny or serious captions for photos. Encourages creativity, humour, and sentence structure.

Role-play – Pretend to be one of the people in the picture and act out what they might say or do. Great for perspective-taking and expressive language.

Fostering disability-inclusive communities is how we drive real social progress.
Inclusion isn’t an add-on, it’s the foundation of a fair, connected society.

At Autumn Therapy, this looks like:
• Creating environments (schools, workplaces, services, community spaces) that are accessible without extra barriers
• Recognising neurodiversity, communication differences, and mobility needs as natural parts of human diversity
• Ensuring people with disability are included in decisions, policies, and everyday practices
• Moving beyond “special” or separate approaches and embracing universal access, representation, and respect

When communication is accessible, participation becomes possible and when people can participate, our whole community grows stronger.
