Final Panelist Revealed!

“You Don’t Know What You Don’t Know”

Inside Access: A Deaf Prisoner’s Journey and the Interpreter’s Role

This powerful, eye-opening panel brings together lived experience and professional expertise to unpack what access really looks like behind prison walls.

Learn from Chelsey (Casper) Campbell, a Deaf former prisoner, as she courageously shares her firsthand experience of communication barriers in custody.

Gain rare insight from Jennifer Maclaughlan, prison social worker and Auslan interpreter, on prison systems, daily life, and the realities of communication behind bars.

Experienced Deaf Interpreter, Linda Warby will talk about the role of Deaf Interpreters in prison settings and share her top tips.

David McQuiggin, a Hearing Interpreter from NSW with 20+ years interpreting experience, and many years of experience as an interpreter educator will offer practical strategies, real-world tips, and perspectives you won’t find in textbooks.

Hosted by AIMS Director Alana Wiekart, Certified Interpreter with 20+ years’ experience who has interpreted across prisons in QLD, NSW, and WA, the session concludes with a live Q&A.

Essential learning for interpreters committed to equity, access, and professional growth.

Participants will be eligible for 10 NAATI revalidation points for Auslan Interpreters and 0.2 RID CEUs for ASL Interpreters.
