You Don’t Know What You Don’t Know

Inside Access: A Deaf Prisoner’s Journey and the Interpreter’s Role

This powerful, eye-opening panel brings together lived experience and professional expertise to unpack what access really looks like behind prison walls.

Learn from Chelsey (Casper) Campbell, a Deaf former prisoner, as she courageously shares her firsthand experience of communication barriers in custody. Gain rare insight from Jennifer Maclaughlan, prison social worker and Auslan interpreter, on prison systems, daily life, and the realities of communication behind bars.

Soon to be announced, two more panelists, a Deaf Interpreter and a Hearing Interpreter with prison interpreting experience, this session will offer practical strategies, real-world tips, and perspectives you won’t find in textbooks.

Hosted by AIMS Director Alana Wiekart, Certified Interpreter with 20+ years’ experience who has interpreted across prisons in QLD, NSW, and WA, the session concludes with a live Q&A.

Essential learning for interpreters committed to equity, access, and professional growth.

Participants will be eligible for 10 NAATI revalidation points for Auslan Interpreters and 0.2 RID CEUs for ASL Interpreters.

Deaf Community members are welcome to attend for free but we still need you to register your details.

Please share this with anyone you know who is in a position to support Deaf access and interpreter longevity. Please don’t donate if you are Deaf or an interpreter, as this initiative is ultimately for you.😃

Every Deaf child deserves access to education, it’s a human right.

But in Australia, many Deaf students go without credentialed Auslan interpreters. Imagine being in class where the teacher speaks a language you can’t hear, you’d fall behind, miss friends, and miss learning. That’s the reality for too many.

And it’s not just kids. Deaf adults are also missing out, in hospitals, at work, at uni, in courts, because there are only about 300 full-time interpreters for 16,000+ Deaf Auslan users.

Many interpreters leave early due to burnout, injury & lack of support. AIMS (Allied Interpreter Mentorship & Support) is changing that, offering training, mentoring & holistic support so interpreters can stay in the profession long-term.

Recent workshops included:
✨ Resilience & Stress Relief
✨ Interpreting Across Cultures
✨ Music Interpreting
…with feedback like “Inspirational” and “The best workshop I’ve ever been to.”

👉 To keep this going, we need your help.
Please donate or share.
Because supporting interpreters = better access for the Deaf community.

Interesting results from the Deaf perspective about which VRI background you prefer! You mentioned that the choice of background colour really comes down to personal preference, vision needs, and how it complements the interpreter’s skin tone.

Ideally, interpreters should be prepared for all preferences, which is much easier now with the variety of reversible screens available. 😃
