Before letting your child play on a slide, consider these things?

Slide height - how high the slide is off the ground significant impacts the outcome of a fall, should your child accidentally fall off. Typically for children less then 1 years they should be on a slide that is either shorter than them, and a slide where you can hold them comfortably!

Where a slide is and what it is made of impacts the temperature of the slide, and its wear and tear! A slide in the sun without shade will be hotter in summer, as would a metal slide compared to a plastic slide.

The condition of the slide, such as gaps, holes or breakages increases the risk of little fingers becoming stuck, or lacerations occurring. Always check the condition of the playground, especially if you are the first there in the morning.

Finally, check the landing space of the slide. Sometimes sand or mulch falls away so the drop is a lot larger then intended. This means your child's head may hit the slide or they may fall heavily to the ground.

What is your favourite slide story?

Slides are the leading cause of injury in playgrounds. Slide injuries are anything from mild scraps and bruises to major head injuries due to falls.

Teach your child these safety tips to prevent injury.

Stay in the centre of the slide 👉 Teaching your child to not lean over the edge, will reduce the risk of them accidentally falling from the slide

Do not climb up the slide if others are on it 👉 Teaching your child to use the slide one way will prevent scraps for others running into them as they climb.

Go down one at a time 👉 This ensures there is no risk of feet or other body parts getting caught or accidentally getting pushed off the edge.

No pushing or shoving on or near a slide 👉 Slides are a massive falls risk, especially when at the top of the slide. Teaching your child to go down in order, and not to play games at the top of the slide.

Slides a wonderful piece of playground equipment. They encourage climbing up to the platform, trunk control when going down and give great vestibular input.

Safe sliding is a parent's responsibility. Ensure that the slide is the right height for your child's and you. Yous should be able to hold a child under 12 months around their chest, to provide support on a slide.

Teach your child to always go down a slide feet first, and with their feet close together. This prevents head injuries at the bottm, and ensures their feet do not get caught on the sides of the slide.

If you want to go down the slide with your child, ensure that you hold their feet up and away from your own feet. This prevents their feet from getting caught under your legs or between your legs and the slide.
