On Saturday 10th May, Directions Support Worker Gloria Heuvink was nominated for the Inclusion Communities Award at the WA Disability Support Awards 2025.

Gloria was recognised for her tireless advocacy for Directions' clients who use Leisure World in Thornlie. Gloria was compelled to speak up when she noticed that accessible toilets were mostly being utilised by people who didn't need them, leaving vulnerable people waiting up to 45 minutes to access toilets to change out of wet clothes following laps and hydrotherapy sessions in the pools.

After several meetings with Centre management, locks were installed on the changerooms, with keys available from the front desk.

Despite how long it took for this solution to be implemented, Gloria remained passionate about the cause with professionalism and understanding that real change takes time.

On the night of the awards dinner, the Hon. Hannah Beazley MLA Minister for Disability Services, spoke with Gloria about her nomination and congratulated her on her efforts

Today at the Directions office, the Christmas competition was fierce, and the creativity was amazing. The challenge was to decorate their workspace, and make it as festive as possible!!!
We had a Christmas bakery, with all home made goodies! A Gingerbread house, hand crafted with exquisite detail. A real life Elf on the shelf, a Traditional Christmas, Aussie Christmas, Winter wonderland and a beautiful Christmas forest. We also had Mickey Mouse join us this Christmas, and The Grinch also paid the office a visit!!!

Winning the best pod for this year was the Gingerbread house.

The office staff were treated today with Christmas Cupcakes, made by one of our clients whilst she was on support with one of our support workers.
The vanilla flavoured cupcake's, with festive green icing and sprinkles was a real yummy treat for us all.
Its beginning to look a lot like Christmas.

Directions Staff joined together at our Christmas Party at Thornlie Bowling Club on Saturday night with some drinks and nibbles to celebrate a wonderful year.
The competition on the bowling green was fierce, and competitive, with Lawn Bowls proving to be more difficult than I think we all expected.
There was lots of giggles and of course moral support, with only a couple of people hitting the jack!!!
Majority of people thought that they were ten pin bowling which meant that there ball ended in the gutter, mine included!
It was a lovely night seeing everyone relaxed and having a nice time. We will need to get our thinking caps on for next year, as it seems that we have quite a competitive bunch!
