Anatomy Info:🩸 Sesamoid Bones: Orchestrators of Motion

Nestled within tendons, sesamoid bones alter the angle of tendons as they pass over joints. They act like pulleys! This modification enhances the mechanical advantage of the tendon, allowing it to exert more force with less effort. This is particularly crucial in weight-bearing joints like the foot, aiding in activities such as walking, running, and jumping. They also provide a smooth surface for the tendons to glide over, which minimises wear and tear on the tendon and joint and the sesamoids go above and beyond acting as a buffer, absorbing force so the tendon doesn’t have to.

Of course, things sometimes go wrong: Conditions like sesamoiditis, an inflammation of these small bones, can arise due to overuse or trauma, resulting in pain and compromised mobility.

That’s where we come in. If things just don’t feel as powerful, as smooth or as easy as you move your feet, hands, knees (or any part of you) contact us on info@activeosteopathy.com.au. The osteopaths at Active Osteopathy and Podiatry are here to help.

Do you do a lot of manual lifting at work? Let's ensure you're lifting like a pro! πŸš€

πŸ€” Lift Smart, Lift Well: Our osteopaths recommend maintaining a stable base, bending your knees and hips whilst keeping a straight back, and keeping the load close to your body. This technique minimises strain on your back and joints. πŸ’ͺ

🌈 4 Tips for Safe Lifting:

- Know your limits and ask for help with heavy items.
- Avoid twisting - if turning is necessary, pivot your entire body instead of twisting your spine.
- Take breaks to avoid fatigue and strain.
- Prioritise good posture to distribute weight evenly.

And of course, whether you're lifting or not keep your core strong and your spine supple.

πŸ‘©β€βš•οΈ Your Wellness Matters: If lifting is causing discomfort, it's time to address it. Email us at info@activeosteopathy.com.au to book an appointment with the osteopaths at Active Osteopathy and Podiatry Let's get to work to ensure your work doesn't hurt you!

🧠 Migraines vs. Tension-Type Headaches: A Tale of Two Pains

Migraines originate from deep within the brain, triggering the release of inflammatory substances around nerves and blood vessels. It is most common amongst women, according to WHO by a factor of about 2:1, because of hormonal influences. Tension-type headaches, on the other hand, often stem from muscle tension.

πŸ“ˆ Prevalence: Migraines, with their distinctive throbbing pain, affect around 12% of the population. Tension-type headaches, characterised by a squeezing or pressure sensation, are more common, impacting a whopping 30-80% of people at some point.

Feeling the squeeze or the throb? πŸ“§ Email us for an appointment on info@activeosteopathy.com.au. The osteopaths at Active Osteopathy and Podiatry may be able to help with a tailored treatment plan.

Word of the Day: Pterygoid.

Is it just us or does it sound like a dinosaur thing... but, no - it's an anatomy thing... "Pteryx" (wing) and "eidos" (form) are more about the wing-like architecture of the Pterygoid muscles than flight! ✨

Situated deep within the jaw, the medial Pterygoid aids in closing the jaw and is instrumental in the initial phase of mastication (another dinosaur sounding word...πŸ“š), while the lateral Pterygoid, with its two heads, facilitates jaw opening and helps with biting and grinding.

It's intricate and beautiful - of course things sometimes go wrong πŸ‘Ž. Tensions or spasms in these muscles may contribute to jaw pain, difficulty in opening or closing the mouth, disturbances in bite alignment, and even chronic headaches. What can you do? You can message us πŸ“§ on info@activeosteopathy.com.au to make an appointment at Active Osteopathy and Podiatry. We're here to help (and to enjoy words).

πŸ“Š STAT ALERT: Approximately 12% of Football Injuries are Calf Strains. And, according to Physiopedia,,the majority of calf strains are strains of the gastrocnemius muscle.

πŸ€• Understanding the Vulnerability:
The gastrocnemius muscle is a biarticular powerhouse (it extends over two joints - the knee and ankle.) Unfortunately, it's biarticular nature makes it more prone to injury, especially during sudden bursts of acceleration and braking.

🦡 Huh?
The calf has three muscles, the gastrocnemius, soleus, and plantaris. The gastrocnemius, working in tandem with the soleus, facilitates plantarflexion of the ankle (pointing your feet) and flexion at the knee (bending it). But it faces limitations in exerting maximum power on both joints simultaneously. Activities like sprinting subject long muscles to high internal forces and rapid changes in muscle length, escalating the risk of strain.

🩹 Take Action:
Feeling the strain or looking to prevent it? Our clinic specialises in addressing muscle injuries, including those affecting the gastrocnemius. (We've had a lot of practice.) Get in touch with us at info@activeosteopathy.com.au to schedule an appointment and step onto the path of recovery.

Empower yourself with knowledge, safeguard your muscles, and stay ahead in the game of fitness! πŸ’ͺ🦡

πŸšΆβ€β™€οΈ Why More Steps?

Heart Health: Boost cardiovascular fitness and keep your heart happy with every step.

Energy Surge: Feel more energised as each step sends a revitalising message to your body.

Mood Lift: Walking releases endorphins, enhancing your mood and reducing stress.

🚢 How to Step It Up:

Take Short Walks: Break up your day with short walks, especially if you have a sedentary job.

Choose Stairs: Opt for stairs instead of elevators; it's an excellent way to squeeze in extra steps.

πŸ” Anatomy Facts: Introducing the Bursae.

Just how do your joints articulate against each other without grinding? (Most of the time...) Enter the bursae, minuscule sacs strategically nestled around joints. We’re not joking when we say β€œminuscule” - they are a mere few millimetres thick and on average only 4cm in diameter! Picture this: around 150 bursae artfully distributed throughout the body, each containing synovial fluid – a viscosity masterpiece akin to egg white. Bursae facilitate seamless motion by reducing friction between tendons, muscles, and bones. (Egg white level gooeyness will do that!)

Unfortunately, overuse, trauma, and repetitive stress can lead to bursitis, a condition where these sacs become inflamed. Inflammation equals pain, swelling and restricted movement. If this is you it's time to contact us on info@activeosteopathy.com.au to make an appointment with one of the osteopaths at Active Osteopathy and Podiatry. We're here to help.

🌐 Word of the Month: Orbit 🌌

Etymology: From the Latin "orbita," meaning a track or rut.

Greetings from Active Osteopathy and Podiatry, where our Word of the Month takes us on a journey around the "orbit" – not just in space but within the human body!

The orbit, housing the eye, is a delicate structure. It’s not uncomplicated… Misalignments or dysfunctions can impact not only vision but also contribute to headaches and facial pain.

πŸ” Why Do Things Go Wrong?

Strain and Tension: Prolonged screen time, stress, or poor ergonomics may contribute to tension affecting the orbit.

Sinus Congestion: Sinus issues can influence the orbit, causing discomfort and affecting eye movement.

Alignment Discrepancies: Misalignments in the cranial structures can influence the orbit's function.

The osteopaths at Active Osteopathy and Podiatry specialise in addressing orbital concerns so contact us on info@activeosteopathy.com.au to book an appointment today. We are here to help.
