Don't miss this incredible opportunity!

If you’ve been waiting for the right place to begin your nursing or midwifery career … this is your sign.

Graduate Registered Nurse Brooke McKaig remembers stepping onto the Medical Ward at Mater Private Hospital Townsville feeling nervous — but she wasn’t stepping in alone.

With a team who backed her, supported her and believed in her, that daunting transition from student to RN suddenly felt achievable.

Now, Brooke says she’s grown real confidence, made a meaningful impact on patients, and built the kind of career she always imagined.

“I would absolutely, without a doubt, recommend Mater’s Graduate Program to any new grad,” Brooke said.

🤩 1 week to go — week 39 🤩

👶 Your baby is now about the size of a wallaby joey, typically weighing 3.3–3.5+ kg and measuring 50–52 cm. They’ve developed a strong grasp, their reflexes are now beautifully coordinated, and their lungs continue to mature in preparation for breathing independently. Their brain has tripled in weight during the third trimester — these final days support incredible growth and readiness for birth.

🏥 Our update: In just one week, we’ll be opening the doors to our new maternity home at Pimlico. We can’t wait to welcome you into this thoughtfully designed space — created with comfort, privacy, and family‑centred care at its heart.

💕 If you’re unsure about how the move may affect your birth or upcoming appointments, your obstetrician or midwife is the best person to guide you through the details.

🤩 2 weeks to go — week 38 🤩

👶 Your baby is now about the size of a small quokka (around 3.1–3.2 kg and 49–51 cm long). Their organs are fully developed, they’re shedding vernix and lanugo, and their lungs are producing surfactant — all crucial preparation for breathing on their own after birth.

🏥 Our update: We’re just two weeks away from opening the doors to our refreshed maternity unit at Mater Mothers’ Private Townsville, Pimlico. Our team is putting the final touches on the space, and we can’t wait to welcome families into an environment designed for comfort, calm and confidence.

💕If you have questions about how the move may relate to your birth plan, your care team will be able to guide you during this time.

🤩3 weeks to go — week 37 🤩

👶Your baby is now about the size of a bilby (around 2.9–3.0 kg and 48–50 cm long!). Their circulatory system is fully developed, their bones and muscles are strong, and they’re busy building those healthy fat stores for birth.

🏥Our update: We’re now just three weeks away from welcoming families to our new Pimlico location. Our team is carefully preparing every detail to ensure a smooth transition and the same calm, supportive environment you rely on.

♥ If you have questions about appointments or birth planning during this time, your obstetrician or midwife is the best person to guide you.

Our story

The Mater Misericordiae Hospital Townsville opened in 1945 in West End when the Sisters of Mercy purchased the Lister Private Hospital from Dr Halberstater OBE.

In 1962 the Hospital was relocated from West End to the present Mater Hospital Pimlico site on Fulham Road, where it had a bed capacity of 50. The transfer to the new Hospital was made possible by the support provided to the Sisters of Mercy by a dedicated group of local fundraisers. This support has continued over the years and has enabled the Sisters of Mercy to expand services significantly.

The Mater Women's & Children's Hospital Hyde Park was purchased in 2007.

In 2008 the Mater Misericordiae Hospital Townsville Limited changed its name to Mater Health Services North Queensland and the Mater Women’s & Children’s Hospital was born at a separate facility in Hyde Park, becoming the first regional facility dedicated to women’s and children’s health.
