As we light the final candle of Advent, we embrace the heart of the season, Love.
It’s the love that inspired the Sisters of Mercy to care for the vulnerable, and the same love that drives every Mater staff member today.

This Christmas, let love be more than a feeling — let it be an action. A donation, a kind word, a shared smile.

Today, we light the rose candle which is a symbol of Joy.
We witness joy in the little moments each day. Whether it’s a newborn’s first cry, a smile from a friendly volunteer or the supportive hug from a loved one, we celebrate the joy that radiates from acts of generosity, healing and compassion.

This week, we light the second candle of Advent, Peace.
Peace isn’t just a feeling, it’s a gift we give through compassion.
At Mater, we bring peace to those in their most vulnerable moments.

Let’s take this time to pause, breathe and share peace wherever we go.

As the season of Advent begins, we light the first candle as a symbol of Hope.
At Mater, hope shines through the courage of every patient, the dedication of every staff member, and the generosity of every supporter.

This Christmas, we reflect on the hope that unites us — the hope for healing, for compassion, and for a brighter future.

Today on we pause to honour those who made the ultimate sacrifice in service, remember those who have come home injured or ill, in body or spirit and acknowledge those who bravely serve our country today.

Eight decades ago, the Sisters of Mercy recognised the need to provide healthcare to Townsville's growing population - and the city's very first Mater hospital opened. 🏥

Since then, our facility has grown and evolved, welcoming new services and technology - but one thing that hasn't changed is the heart behind our work. 💝

Our story

The Mater Misericordiae Hospital Townsville opened in 1945 in West End when the Sisters of Mercy purchased the Lister Private Hospital from Dr Halberstater OBE.

In 1962 the Hospital was relocated from West End to the present Mater Hospital Pimlico site on Fulham Road, where it had a bed capacity of 50. The transfer to the new Hospital was made possible by the support provided to the Sisters of Mercy by a dedicated group of local fundraisers. This support has continued over the years and has enabled the Sisters of Mercy to expand services significantly.

The Mater Women's & Children's Hospital Hyde Park was purchased in 2007.

In 2008 the Mater Misericordiae Hospital Townsville Limited changed its name to Mater Health Services North Queensland and the Mater Women’s & Children’s Hospital was born at a separate facility in Hyde Park, becoming the first regional facility dedicated to women’s and children’s health.
