A big week with the National SIL Summit held here on the Gold Coast.

It's always great to connect with other providers, talk about the opportunities and challenges as well as the learning.

I also caught up with the other co-authors for a signing of our book.

An honour to be asked to share my knowledge in having a Growth Mindset so others can understand we all have similar internal battles. How you think and acknowledge these is 85% of how you will move past challenging ones.

It is Tuesday, and I have had three enquiries for 1:1 SIL care for 24 hour care.

I know that may not be surprising as referrals come through for businesses all the time. The difference is, they have all been recommended by other clients or Support Coordinators who know what we do. A great problem to have right?!!

What is disappointing is the repeated stories about why they are looking for a new provider. Heart breaking stories that the families are sharing.

Let me share some of what I heard:

Staff are not preparing meals that are required as per the dietician plans - (they are TOO HARD apparently). Just giving a pie, or takeaway.

Communication is not happening - even after the families are sharing their concerns, NOTHING IS HAPPENING.

Clients are being left unattended while the support worker goes and 1) does their own shopping, 2) goes on a ride with their friends, 3) leaves the client alone by not attending the hospital. them.

These stories paint a pretty ugly picture. I felt sick and they are NOT my family. I was disappointed and agitated because to have the same story from three different potential clients is not a coincidence.

Please - if you are a provider in this space, consider what you are doing. Take care with your team. Implement training. Be professional. Do what you say you are going to do.

I am VERY PROUD of the work we do. To have people talk to us because they have seen the difference we are making in people's lives. But I am sick of apologising for the poor actions of others. This is not acceptable. If you can't treat an individual who needs support correctly, I am happy to take these clients onboard.

MYASSISTA WILL PROVIDE CARE THAT MAKES A DIFFERENCE.

Last week I shared a post about hosting a client with Dementia in our Cottage Respite. Allowing his partner to have a break. The first time in a long time.

The weekend went well with the client. Of course he was anxious and he needed constant reassurance. When talking with him his stories were repeated over and over and he believed he was about 50 and still living and working in New Zealand. But this is par for the course.

We had learnt he needed to be busy all the time. He helped us fold towels and the laundry, putting it away. Over and over. He contributed by giving us some advice on what we should do with the brick wall at the edge of the balcony. He walked around bunnings and was planning what he needed to do for the renovation he was planning of his unit.

While this was obviously not the reality for us, it was his reality. And this is where we supported him. Where we respected him and encouraged his interaction.

Today his wife sent this email of Thanks. I called and reassured her that what he had said to the team was not really out of character. And he hadn't caused any issues. And, he was welcome back at any time.

Learning who you are and how you work takes time.

Luckily, I have spent some time working in different sectors, facing challenges, growing personally and professionally. Supported by mentors who have helped me recognise the importance of understanding myself.

When Tania Gomez asked me if I was interested in sharing some of my learnings in a book designed to help new and emerging leaders in the NDIS space, I didn't think twice. I know I have always valued the experience of others and what they can teach me.

So I spent some time thinking and sharing important and sometimes uncomfortable lessons to include in this new book. Future-proofing your NDIS business.

Sharing lessons learnt, fears and triumphs. Helping people understand and learn from my failures, growth and experience.

It will be available on Kindel, Audible and in hard copy too if you are old school like me and like to hold a book in your hands. You can pre-order too!!

So grateful to share and help others on the same journey. You don't have to do this alone.

Today we hosted a client with dementia in respite.

Seems pretty straight forward when we are asked about what we do. In reality, it is much more.

This client lives with his partner and they have a business together. She has been working full-time for the last 3years, gradually picking up the responsibilities that were originally shared. He did the maintenance around their management block, she worked in the office.

Now she works 2 full time roles AND cares for him as well.

Some days he does leave to access a community respite day program. But she isn't taking time out to relax, she is working two jobs...before he gets back to make sure she has him by her side and can focus on him.

This lady is exhausted. She hasn't had an extended break. So we are hosting him this weekend. She has long time friends travelling to spend time with her and encouraged to take the steps to have a time out.

This is why we do what we do. Genuine care and support for people who are breaking. Helping them to maintain an identity beyond that of a carer. Helping the individual we are caring for to feel safe and respected.

It is more than respite. It is a safety net for relationships. It is maintaining sanity and avoiding burnout.
