Across South Australia, coastal communities are facing a natural event that has caught the attention of many — a large-scale algal bloom affecting several regions. This is a complex and evolving environmental issue, and while it is creating challenges for some of our coastal neighbours, I want to take this opportunity to provide some reassurance and local context for the Port Augusta community.

An algal bloom occurs when tiny plant-like organisms in the water — called algae — grow very quickly and in large numbers. The current bloom, made up of Karenia species, can harm fish and other gill-breathing marine life by damaging their gills and reducing oxygen levels in the water. This makes it difficult for them to breathe, sometimes leading to suffocation.

Scientists believe the bloom will eventually pass, but it is difficult to predict when — and unfortunately, there is no quick fix. We can’t chemically treat or flush the ocean, so nature has to do the work. This makes managing such an event very challenging, especially as many of us have not experienced something of this scale before.

Each week, Mayors and Chief Executive Officers from across the State are meeting with the South Australian Government for regular updates and briefings. I can confidently say that communication and coordination at all levels have been strong, with clear information being shared through hotline services, FAQ sheets, and council websites to keep residents and visitors informed.

If you have questions or concerns about the algal bloom, the Community Algal Bloom Hotline is available on 1800 774 779 (Freecall).

Here in Port Augusta, we’re fortunate that our part of the Spencer Gulf has not been directly affected by the algal bloom at this stage. However, we continue to stay alert and engaged in ongoing discussions to ensure that if conditions change, we are ready to respond swiftly.

Meanwhile, Council is continuing to focus on the care and presentation of our foreshore areas. This includes the removal of excess samphire vegetation on the western foreshore and raking both the west and east side beach areas — with valuable assistance from Department for Correctional Services work crews.

We are particularly looking forward to seeing families, friends, and visitors enjoying the foreshore over the summer period — whether boating, fishing from the banks or boats, exploring the water with kayaks or paddle boards, or making use of the new pontoon. It’s a wonderful opportunity for our community to connect with nature, stay active, and make the most of everything our beautiful coastline has to offer.

Also if you are travelling this summer don’t forget that SA Tourism is supporting coastal communities with travel incentives through the expanded Coast is Calling travel voucher program. This summer holiday round includes 30,000 vouchers, with $100 experience vouchers and accommodation vouchers ranging from $100, $200, and $500 depending on the length of stay. For the first time, registered holiday rentals such as Airbnbs, the Kangaroo Island ferry, and guided sporting experiences across eligible coastal postcodes are included. A ballot draw will be held on December 4, for travel between December 5 and April 26, with any unused vouchers by January 19 to be redrawn so as many vouchers as possible are taken up. To be part of the ballot draw visit the SA Tourism Commission website.

The algal bloom reminds us that we share a deep connection with our natural environment — and that managing it sometimes means adapting to circumstances beyond our control. What we can control, however, is how we work together, stay informed, and continue to care for our coastline, our community, and our broader South Australian coast.

While the impact we are experiencing here in Port Augusta is minimal, it is most certainly having a greater impact on other areas. Businesses and the fishing industry we wish for you to know that our thoughts are with you all and we continue to hope for a sound recovery.

The regional hub - Port Augusta

Port Augusta City Council is located at the head of Spencer Gulf in South Australia and includes Stirling North and the seaside homes located at Commissariat Point, Blanche Harbor and Miranda and has a population of almost 14,000 people. Council acknowledges and respects the traditional owners, their ancestors and the sharing of lands on which Port Augusta is situated.

Called ‘the crossroads of Australia’ because roads from Sydney to Perth and Adelaide to Darwin all pass through Port Augusta. This regional hub, where the Outback meets the ocean, is a major tourism, shopping, government and service centre. Getting to Port Augusta is easy with multiple air services, seven day bus service to and from Adelaide, and The Ghan and Indian Pacific railway service passing through. The city offers a vibrant range of cafés, pubs and restaurants and accommodation.

There are a range of attractions for the whole family including the Wadlata Outback Centre. To get the whole story on the region, creep through the jaws of Max, a giant Ripper lizard, to begin a journey through the Flinders Ranges & Outback’s ‘Tunnel of Time’. There’s the nationally-accredited Port Augusta Visitor Information Centre onsite where you can find out more about the region, and book tours and accommodation.

See an amazing array of arid zone plants and one of Australia’s most significant collections of Eremophilas at the Australian Arid Lands Botanic Garden. Open daily, it is also home to more than 100 native bird species. Stroll through the AridSmart Display Gardens to discover how to create your own native garden. The visitor centre has a café, serving native-flavoured food and regional wines, as well as a gift and garden shop.
