Port Augusta City Council is inviting the community to have their say on the draft Stormwater Management Plan (SMP). The SMP is a long-term plan that guides how stormwater is managed across the city. It focuses on reducing flood risk, improving water quality, and helping to create safer, cleaner and more liveable neighbourhoods now and into the future.

Why has the Stormwater Management Plan been prepared?
The draft plan has been developed to:

👉Improve our understanding of stormwater and flood risks across Port Augusta
👉Guide future decision-making to better manage flooding, protect the environment and build resilience to climate change

The plan has been prepared by Port Augusta City Council in partnership with the Stormwater Management Authority, with support from specialist consultants Southfront.

Through community consultation in 2025, 23 priority areas were identified for stormwater and flooding issues across the city.

We now want to hear from you — have we missed any areas or issues that should be included in the priority planning?

How to have your say
You can provide feedback in several ways:

👉View the draft Stormwater Management Plan online and complete the online survey https://www.portaugusta.sa.gov.au/enquiries/your-say/current-consultation/stormwater-management-plan-smp-community-consultation

👉Download supporting information sheets
👉Visit the Council Civic Centre, 4 Mackay Street, to view the draft in person and complete a hard-copy survey

Submissions close: Friday 27 February 2026 at 5:00pm.

Your feedback is important and will help shape how stormwater is managed in Port Augusta into the future.

Jordan and Pam have been proudly promoting Port Augusta at the South Australian Caravan, Camping & Outdoor Show 🚐
They’ve had plenty of great conversations with travellers about visiting our town, exploring the beautiful Australian Arid Lands Botanic Garden, discovering the stories of the outback at the Wadlata Outback Centre, and using Port Augusta as the gateway to the outback and the stunning Flinders Ranges.

The regional hub - Port Augusta

Port Augusta City Council is located at the head of Spencer Gulf in South Australia and includes Stirling North and the seaside homes located at Commissariat Point, Blanche Harbor and Miranda and has a population of almost 14,000 people. Council acknowledges and respects the traditional owners, their ancestors and the sharing of lands on which Port Augusta is situated.

Called ‘the crossroads of Australia’ because roads from Sydney to Perth and Adelaide to Darwin all pass through Port Augusta. This regional hub, where the Outback meets the ocean, is a major tourism, shopping, government and service centre. Getting to Port Augusta is easy with multiple air services, seven day bus service to and from Adelaide, and The Ghan and Indian Pacific railway service passing through. The city offers a vibrant range of cafés, pubs and restaurants and accommodation.

There are a range of attractions for the whole family including the Wadlata Outback Centre. To get the whole story on the region, creep through the jaws of Max, a giant Ripper lizard, to begin a journey through the Flinders Ranges & Outback’s ‘Tunnel of Time’. There’s the nationally-accredited Port Augusta Visitor Information Centre onsite where you can find out more about the region, and book tours and accommodation.

See an amazing array of arid zone plants and one of Australia’s most significant collections of Eremophilas at the Australian Arid Lands Botanic Garden. Open daily, it is also home to more than 100 native bird species. Stroll through the AridSmart Display Gardens to discover how to create your own native garden. The visitor centre has a café, serving native-flavoured food and regional wines, as well as a gift and garden shop.
