Alcohol can interact with many medicines, and this interaction can change the way both the alcohol and medicine affect you. Taking alcohol with certain medication can result in serious consequences to your health, such as trouble breathing, heart problems and severe sedation.
If you’re taking medication, speak with your doctor, pharmacist, or health professional about whether it is safe to drink alcohol. If a product includes an alcohol warning, do not drink alcohol.
Common medicines that react with alcohol include:
1. opioid pain medications
2. antidepressants
3. antipsychotic medicines
4. anxiety medications
5. sleeping tablets
6. antihistamines
7. cold and flu medicines
8. some antibiotics
