We hear it often: "I didn't realise I could get this kind of care here."

Port Hedland is a regional town but that doesn't mean you should have to compromise on your eye health.

At Hedland Eye Care, we've invested in the same diagnostic technology and clinical expertise you'd expect to find in a specialist clinic in Perth or any major capital city.

OCT imaging. Retinal photography. Corneal mapping. Visual field analysis. Evidence-based, patient-centred care.

All of it, right here.

If you've been managing an eye condition with regular trips to Perth, we'd love to talk with you about what's possible locally. Your time is valuable. Your care doesn't have to stop when your flight is cancelled.

If you live with diabetes - type 1 or type 2 - your eyes are one of the first places the disease leaves its mark.

Diabetic retinopathy is a complication of diabetes that damages the blood vessels in the retina.

In its early stages, it has no symptoms at all. By the time you notice changes to your vision, significant and irreversible damage may have already occurred.

According to the Centre for Eye Research Australia, diabetic retinopathy is one of the leading causes of vision impairment in working-age Australians.

The encouraging news is that when managed early, the risk of severe vision loss from diabetic retinopathy is dramatically reduced.

What this means for you:

✔ If you have diabetes, you should have a comprehensive eye examination at least once a year

✔ Retinal photography and OCT imaging can detect early changes before any symptoms appear

✔ Blood sugar management directly influences your eye health outcomes

At Hedland Eye Care, we work with diabetic patients to monitor retinal health closely and provide the clinical documentation needed for GP and specialist collaboration.

You shouldn't have to go to Perth just to have your eyes properly managed.

"Patient-centred care" is a phrase that gets thrown around a lot in healthcare. But what does it actually mean in practice?

At Hedland Eye Care, it means a few specific things:

📋 We take a full history: not just your prescription, but your medical history, family history, lifestyle, and concerns

⏱️ We don't rush. If you have questions, we answer them, in plain language, without the jargon

🔄 We build a long-term care plan, not a one-off appointment

🤝 We collaborate with your GP and other specialists when needed

💬 We follow up. If something needs monitoring, we schedule it and we contact you

It also means we will never recommend a product or service you don't need.

We are an independent practice. Our income doesn't depend on upselling you on the most expensive frames or unnecessary add-ons. Every recommendation we make is clinically justified.

That's what patient-first care looks like. And that's the standard you deserve.

There's more to your vision than what you see when you're looking straight ahead, and a visual field test is the only way to properly assess your peripheral (side) vision.

Visual field testing is used to detect conditions that cause peripheral vision loss before it becomes noticeable in everyday life. These include:

👁️ Glaucoma — one of the earliest detectable changes is loss of peripheral vision

🧠 Neurological conditions affecting the visual pathway

💊 Medication side effects that impact vision

📍 Retinal conditions causing blind spots

The test itself is straightforward and non-invasive: you look at a central point of light and respond to flashes of light in your peripheral field. The results map the full extent of your visual function.

At Hedland Eye Care, visual field analysis is part of our comprehensive eye examination because we believe a thorough picture of your vision requires examining all of it, not just the centre.

Myopia, or short-sightedness, is becoming one of the most significant eye health challenges of our time, particularly among children and young adults.

Researchers at the Brien Holden Vision Institute projected that by 2050, half of the world's population will be myopic.

In Australia, myopia is already increasing at a significant rate, particularly among school-age children spending more time on screens and less time outdoors.

What you need to know as a parent:

📱 Increased near-work and screen time is strongly associated with myopia development

☀️ Time outdoors (at least 90 minutes per day) is one of the most evidence-supported ways to reduce myopia risk in children

👀 Myopia can progress rapidly during childhood so annual exams is essential

💊 Management options including low-dose atropine eye drops and orthokeratology can slow progression

If your child squints, sits close to the TV, or complains of headaches after school, these may be signs of uncorrected myopia.

At Hedland Eye Care, we provide comprehensive paediatric eye examinations and myopia management plans tailored to your child's needs.

Did you know that one in five Australian school-age children has an undetected vision problem - and many of them are dismissed as having learning or behavioural difficulties instead?

Children rarely complain about their vision because they don't know what "normal" looks like.

If your child has never had a comprehensive eye examination, now is the right time.

We recommend:

✔ A first comprehensive eye exam before starting school

✔ Annual exams once school-age

✔ Immediate review if you notice squinting, headaches, or difficulty reading

At Hedland Eye Care, we see patients of all ages, from young children to seniors. We make the experience calm, thorough, and straightforward.

We provide bulk-billing for all children so there's no out-of-pocket cost for your appointment.

School holidays are approaching making it the perfect time to book in - call us on 9163 3711 or book through our website: www.hedlandeyecare.com.au/booking.

Being independent means we answer to our patients; not to a franchise, not to a corporate sales target, not to a quota for spectacle frames.

It means when we recommend a treatment, a test, or a return visit, it's because we genuinely believe it's in your best interest.

Hedland Eye Care was established because Port Hedland and the Pilbara deserved access to permanent, comprehensive, specialist optometric care, delivered by people who live here, work here, and care about this community.

We're proud to be locally owned, locally operated, and entirely focused on your eye health.

If you're looking for an optometrist who puts you first, we'd love to meet you.

Glaucoma affects over 300,000 Australians — and roughly half of them don't know they have it.

It's been called "the silent thief of sight" for a reason: it causes gradual, painless damage to the optic nerve, and by the time most people notice changes to their vision, permanent damage has already occurred.

The good news? When detected early, glaucoma is manageable. The key is knowing your risk and getting tested regularly.

Swipe through to learn who is most at risk, what early detection looks like, and what you can do today.

👉 If you have a family history of glaucoma, please don't wait. Early testing is the most important step you can take.

When you book an appointment at Hedland Eye Care, you're not just getting a prescription check.

You're accessing a suite of diagnostic technology that gives us a comprehensive view of your eye health — from the surface of your cornea to the deepest layers of your retina.

Here's a snapshot of what we use in our examinations:

🔬 Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) — cross-sectional retinal imaging

📸 Retinal Photography — high-resolution baseline images of your retinal health

🌀 Corneal Topography — detailed mapping of your corneal shape

👁️ Visual Field Analysis — detecting changes in your peripheral vision

💧 Dry Eye Assessment — identifying and grading dry eye disease

📊 Tonometry — measuring eye pressure for glaucoma screening

This is the same standard of diagnostic care you'd expect from an optometrist or specialist clinic in Perth — available right here in Port Hedland.

📲 Book your comprehensive eye exam online (www.hedlandeyecare.com.au/booking) or call 9163 3711.

Most people have never heard of an OCT scan. But if you have a family history of:

👁️ glaucoma
👁️ macular degeneration or
👁️ diabetic eye disease

It could be one of the most important things you do for your vision.

An Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) scan gives us a detailed, cross-sectional image of the layers of your retina — think of it like a medical ultrasound, but for your eyes. It allows us to detect subtle changes in retinal structure up to a decade before symptoms appear.

At Hedland Eye Care, we use OCT technology as a standard part of our comprehensive examinations - the same technology you'd expect in a specialist clinic in Perth, right here in Port Hedland.

You shouldn't have to travel to access exceptional eye care.

Book your comprehensive exam online (www.hedlandeyecare.com.au/booking) or call us on 9163 3711.

Did you know the Pilbara has some of the highest all-year UV levels in Australia?

During summer, the UV levels regularly hit 11+ (extreme) and even in winter, it rarely drops below the high-risk level. Why are we telling you this?

Because UV rays have been linked to eye health conditions such as:

🌞 eye cancer
🌞 photokeratitis (sunburn of the eye)
🌞 cataracts
🌞 macular dengeneration
🌞 pterygium (growth on eyes)

The best solution? Wearing glasses and sunglasses are the UPF rated whenever you're outdoors or driving in your car.

Not sure how to tell if your glasses are suitable for the Pilbara sun? Come see us at 2/4 Edgar Street (Edgar Plaza, near Bernie's Place) as we stock a wide range of optometrist-approved sunnies, and can make you lenses tailored to your needs.
