Today, on National Close the Gap Day, we reflect on the journey—and stand proud knowing we are doing what we set out to do. 🤎
At Nih Kaartdijin Mia, we’re raising awareness across our communities and workplaces, creating safer spaces where people feel supported, heard, and understood. Through our training, peer support, and yarns, we’re helping break stigma and making mental health support more accessible for our mob and beyond.
Our Bounce Back 2025 event was another way we brought community together—connecting services, sharing knowledge, and reminding people they’re not alone on their journey.

This is how we close the gap—through action, connection, and walking alongside our people every day.🤎

Nih Kaartdijin Mia – Peer Support Well-Being BBQs

Sometimes the most powerful support starts with something simple — a feed and a yarn.

In 2026, will be travelling across Western Australia hosting Drug & Alcohol Free Peer Support Well-Being BBQs for the community.

These gatherings create a safe and welcoming space for people to connect, share stories, and learn about support available when life gets tough.

At each BBQ we will also share information about:
• Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Mental Health First Aid training
• Youth Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Mental Health First Aid training
• Talking about Non-Suicidal Self-Injury workshops
• Deadly Thinking Youth
• Our new safety initiative YiraLink™

👉🏾As we begin planning these events across different communities, we are seeking collaboration and guidance to ensure we follow the appropriate local processes in each town, showing respect and courtesy to local Elders, community members and organisations.

Everyone is welcome — community members, workers, services and families.

Come down, grab a feed and have a yarn.

📍 Public BBQ venues in each town will be confirmed closer to the event dates

A proud moment for Nih Kaartdijin Mia 🤎
Through we’ve been invited by IP Australia to take part in research around our safety bracelet design — created to support people at high risk.
As an Aboriginal-owned business with a unique design, this recognition means a lot. Not many of our mob get these opportunities, and we’re proud to represent.

We’re grateful, we’re proud, and we’re just getting started 🤎

In 2026, a few mines are set to close (or remain closed) in Western Australia. These are three of them ⬇️

-

1. Yandi Iron Ore Mine (Western Australia) - Operated by Itochu Corp (in joint venture with BHP).

This long-running iron ore mine is scheduled for closure in 2026 due to resource depletion, contributing to moderated national iron ore output growth despite other project ramp-ups.

-

2. Wonmunna Iron Ore Mine (Western Australia) - Associated with Mineral Resources Limited (MRL).

Planned closure in 2026, also due to depletion, with the two mines (Yandi and Wonmunna) together accounting for significant prior output (around 27.2 Mt in 2024).

-

3. Koolan Island iron ore mine (Mount Gibson Iron) - Mining operations at Koolan Island in the Buccaneer Archipelago will not resume in 2026 after an October 2025 rockfall made safe resumption uneconomic, accelerating the previously planned closure timeline.

The original closure had been set around September 2026.

Understanding the pressures of working in construction, catering, mining and FIFO/DIDO life is not just theoretical; it is personal. Having experienced 4:1 rosters myself, I recognise the challenges faced by partners at home while work commitments take family members away. The long swings, missed moments, and emotional ups and downs require real strength to maintain balance, both at home and on site.

At Nih Kaartdijin Mia, our work is grounded in lived experience. We offer culturally safe Mental Health First Aid training tailored for high-pressure environments, including:

👉🏾 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Mental Health First Aid
👉🏾 Youth Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Mental Health First Aid
👉🏾 Peer Support during all workshops

Our approach is practical, respectful, and real. We focus on creating safe spaces for honest conversations, helping individuals recognise the signs of mental health struggles, and equipping participants with the confidence and skills to support those in need.

Training can be delivered on-site at your workplace or in town, depending on what works best for your team. For more information or to discuss a tailored package, please reach out at info@nihkaartdijinmia.com.au or visit www.nihkaartdijinmia.com.au.
