Port Hedland has finally got our new marina and it looks fantastic. My book Jack of all Trades - Sail Away, has all the history of the creation of the spoilbank, the Yacht Club (as a sailing club not the building) and more.

On this day in 1896, Port Hedland was officially gazetted as a town.

Named after Lars Peter Hedlund, a Swedish captain who first sailed into our harbour in 1863.

Then our town began to grow. The first building and business was the Pier Hotel. The jetty was built in 1901, the hospital (now Dome) in 1903, and the railway to Marble Bar started in 1911.

Today, March 8 is the anniversary of Cyclone George crossing the coast very close to Port Hedland and causing a lot of damage to infrastructure in the area. Sadly 3 people lost their lives at mining camps in our hinterland.

March is historically the worst month for devastating cyclones to come down the coast and impact Port Hedland. In 1912 , 151 lives were lost when the SS Koombana sailed out of Port Hedland and into the path of a cyclone. The ship has never been found.

I can’t believe what I am reading here. Our heritage needs to be saved and preserved . This building is one of the oldest buildings still standing in the historic west end of Port Hedland.

The listing NEEDS to be upgraded to a Class A listing on our Heritage Inventory NOT downgraded as this will see our history demolished. You cannot get history back!
