🏗️ 🏗️ We’re thrilled to share that the Hon Minister for Ports Stephen Dawson MLC has announced the winners of the Name the Cranes competition.

…. Drumroll please…🥁

📣 The new cranes for Lumsden Point will be named Arnold and Julie in honour of two local Port Hedland identities Arnold Carter and Julie Arif.

A well-known Port Hedland resident, Arnold, affectionately known as ‘Arnie’ arrived in Port Hedland in 1962, serving on the Town of Port Hedland council for 34 years.

Julie Arif was a much-loved community leader, former elected town councillor, the Port Hedland Visitor Centre’s manager and a founding member of the Port Hedland Historical Society.

The names will soon be displayed on the side of two 84-metre-tall cranes when they arrive at the port later in the year.

Last year, we called on the community to get creative and take part in a unique opportunity to name our impressive new mobile harbour cranes at the Port of Port Hedland’s Lumsden Point development.

A huge thank you to everyone who participated. There were many great suggestions and we received more than 210 entries and 404 name suggestions.

Some people drive past places like this, but it’s worth including in your road trip! 🗺️

In Port Hedland, industry isn’t hidden, it’s part of the landscape.
Iron ore trains stretching for kilometres. Vast salt fields shifting colour with the light. Ships waiting offshore at one of the busiest bulk export ports in the world.

What makes Port Hedland different is that you’re not just passing through it, you can actually get closer to how it all works. From tours to viewing points, it’s one of the few places where visitors can experience the scale of Australia’s resources industry up close.

If you’re the kind of traveller who wants to understand how Australia works, not just how it looks, this is a place worth adding to your list.

Top tip ℹ️ Time your visit around sunrise or sunset, the light across the salt flats and port infrastructure adds a whole different perspective to the landscape.

Would you be curious to see this side of for yourself?

Explore the Koombana Story Around Town ⚓
114 years on, the mystery and legacy of the SS Koombana continue to shape our region’s maritime history.

📍 SS Koombana Lookout
📍 Cemetery Beach Playground, featuring a shipwreck‑themed play space inspired by the 1912 maritime disaster

History lives throughout our Port Hedland community.
