Today is World Su***de Prevention Day but every day is World Su***de Prevention Day. We are all part of the puzzle. Here’s some of our thoughts, tips, opportunities to upskill and options for support…
When we ask someone if they’re ok, or if someone reaches out to us to say they’re not ok, we actually feel relieved, not scared, because they have done one of the hardest steps by letting someone know that they’re not ok. We find that most people reach out through a text or Facebook inbox and that is ok! Reaching out doesn’t have to be super scary.
What happens when someone isn’t ok?
Sometimes people just need a place to vent and get their struggles out of their head, so just listening is what these people need at the time. Some people want to know what services are available to them, so sending through helplines and links is what they need at the time. If you aren’t aware of what’s available then check out Medicare Mental Health at https://www.medicarementalhealth.gov.au/ They can point you in the right direction. Dont forget that we also pin helplines and local services, counsellors and psychologists to the top of our page too.
To feel empowered to assist someone we recommend doing QPR (Question. persuade. refer.) training. QPR assists you to identify the signs of someone struggling and gives steps on how to question, persuade and refer someone. Its FREE and only takes 45 minutes! The code to access it for free is CSA and the link is...

Thanks to Country SA PHN for ensuring this opportunity is free.
If you are looking to do more thorough training, SafeTalk or ASIST are really good options. Get in touch with MATES in Construction SA who have funding to deliver these free of charge on EP. You dont have to work in construction - you just have to be a regional community member.
Speaking of regional, Regional Access offer free counselling sessions to us EP crew too! Either phone or chat.
Are you a farmer? ifarmwell.com.au are a brilliant wealth of support. Created for farmers with the help from farmers. Be sure to check them out!
Are you in the seafood industry? Stay Afloat Australia are your go to crew! They offer a range of support and are currently getting someone on the ground to support face to face on EP!
Also, just to add, if you are a sporting club or community group, there are $5000 grants available at the moment theough Preventive Health SA. This money is for su***de postvention. Hopefully your club/group would never need to implement your postvention response but in the devastating event that you are faced with losing a member of your crew to su***de, the grant can ensure your response is well coordinated to support you all.
If you are bereaved by su***de, we do have a wonderful team who can support you here on EP. StandBy Support After Su***de are available anytime after a su***de and their support is free.
We will be at the Port Lincoln Yacht Club tomorrow for R U OK? Day. Come down for a chat about any of this and collect some brochures.
Lastly, don’t be afraid to ask someone if they’re ok and if YOU are not ok, don’t be afraid to answer truthfully or to reach out and let someone know! Receiving the news that someone you love has died by su***de is devastating and the ripple effect goes on and on and on. Let’s communicate and listen to each other and most importantly, make time and the effort to meet your needs and fill your own ‘buckets’. 💛💛💛
