Do you change your babies nappy every time they wake for a feed at night?

If they are in the newborn stages
YES 👍🏻
A nappy change is helpful to wake them up enough to take a feed. It’s also more common for a newborn to soil their nappy overnight.

For babies a little older
No 👎🏻
A nappy change will wake them up a little too much and can make it difficult to settle them back to sleep. Ideally we just feed and back down, or implement some settling.

However…
If the nappy is soiled 💩
Definitely change 👍🏻
Did you know spoiled nappy overnight in older babies can be a sign they are cold?

If the nappy is starting to leak through
💧
Definitely change 👍🏻
This can be a sign you may need to go up a size in nappies, but also rule out being cold.

The Breastfeeding process is similar or likened to a 3 course meal
Entree, Main and followed by Dessert.

Entree:
As we start off the feed, baby is getting foremilk. This helps to satiate thirst, is watery and appears clear or clearer in colour. You may notice this if you use a breast pump and store breastmilk. It is filled with nutrients, but is not high in fat content, so won’t keep your baby full for very long. After a few minutes the hind milk will come through, and baby will be drinking the fatty, creamier, calorie milk which will fill them up.

Break
Once baby pulls off the breast or seems to be comfort sucking/fallen asleep, we Break. Time for a burp

Main:
We always want to drain the first breast before offering the second. After a burp they go back on the same side they just fed. Having the little breather means they will feed more efficiently on the second offering.
Offering the same side twice ensures they continue drinking the creamy, calorie dense Hind milk, which will keep them fuller for longer.

Break
Time for another breather, burp and
Nappy change. This gives them time to wake up if they have become sleepy, move around, make room for a little more and encourages them to take the next side.

Dessert
This is when we swap to the other side. By offering the second breast we ensure they are nice and full. This is just a top up. They may not take it and that’s ok, it’s only an offering.

When it comes to the next breastfeed, you start on the side you finished on.

Recap:
Feed, burp, offer same breast, burp and nappy change, swap sides, offer
Next feed, start on the side you finished on at the last feed.

This is the way I was taught to feed with my first and never had any Mastitis! The breast is well drained and you ensure Bub is nice and full.

Is your baby overtired or undertired?

There is such a fine line with awake times and so many different recommendations out there. It’s super easy to end up with an unsettled and overtired baby if you play around with their awake time too much.

Awake time guidelines are just that, a guide, and each baby is so different and may require less or more.

And here’s how you fix it ⬇️

Daylight savings transition has a few of you reaching out about Early Rising and how to get back on track.

☀️ Anytime before 6.15am is classified as an overnight wake. So we need to treat it that way by either trying a night feed and back down or implementing some settling to get them back to sleep. Try not to go straight in and get them up at 5-5.30am to start their day. By doing this you are encouraging the early rise and setting their body clocks to wake at this time. Try to settle to as close as you can to 6.30/7am. If not successful you will need to top up feed again at 7am - as we always start the day with a full tummy, and do a bridge nap schedule - see below.

☀️ Anchor the first nap. It doesn’t help if your babies first nap of the day is sometimes 8.30 or sometimes 9.30am.
By aiming for a set nap time each day, we discourage the early rising and help to re-set their body clocks.
The timing of the first nap of the day has a direct affect on the time of wake the following morning! Did you know this?

⏰ Babies on 3 naps and who are waking before 6.15am will need do a 10 minute assisted bridge nap to get them through to their “normal” nap time.

☀️ This will help to stick to schedule, keep nap numbers and lengths normal and bedtime isn’t pushed too late.
Babies thrive off consistency and routine. A later bedtime or too much awake time before bed can also contribute to frequent overnight wakes and early rising.

☀️ We can’t forget to also rule out the usual suspects of early rising

▶️ Warmth, remember to check if baby is warm enough. The early hours of the morning is the coldest part of the night! ▶️ White noise is on, and no environmental or household noises have contributed to the wake
▶️ Room is dark enough and the light coming through in the early hours of the morning isn’t too bright.

Comment “Sleep” if you need help with Early Rising, and I will send you a link ♾️ to help.

Daylight ☀️

One of the simplest ways we can avoid a day/night confusion is spending some of their awake time either near a window so they are exposed to daylight, or outside in the sunlight.

Why is light so important for babies sleep? ☀️

It helps set their internal clocks. Day/night confusion happens because newborns are yet to develop their internal rhythms, these clocks drive our Circadian Rhythm. This internal timing mechanism makes us awake during the day and more tired at night. Developmentally newborns just aren’t ready to decipher this themselves after being in darkness for 9 months.

Help your baby by keeping their surroundings light during the day, with play time or some tummy time so they are moving their little legs and arms, lots of interaction and ensuring they aren’t getting overtired (newborns awake times can be very short).

Keep night time sleep dark and overnight feeds with minimal light. Night feeds should be boring with minimal interaction. Feed, nappy change, feed and back down. You can even keep baby swaddled in that last feed after nappy change. Try not to talk and play with your baby at these feeds, so they stay sleepy and are easier to get back down.

Does your baby sleep well in the pram?

Some babies sleep well and others not so much! The best way to get them used to pram naps is to use it consistently as either a short catnap, usually at the either end of the day for babies on 3 naps, or when out and about.

The trick is to keep as many sleep associations as you can.
1. Swaddle so their arms or startle reflex don’t disturb or wake them, or a light sleeping bag or blanket will help them know it’s nap time.
2. White noise. This helps to minimise distraction and also let’s them know it’s nap time.
3. Assistance to sleep. This is not the time to expect a self settle, so we need to rock the pram back and forth and assist them to sleep.
You will also need to rock them over a sleep cycle if you want them to consolidate a longer nap.
4. Make sure they are going in the pram at their recommended awake time, and are ready for sleep.

Tip: When your trying to resettle a younger baby and it’s not working, have the pram on standby. It’s a bit like finishing the nap with a contact nap.
I did this a lot when my ones were learning to link sleep cycles.

Just a little reminder 👆🏻 especially for my clients just starting out.

We have seen some huge improvements over the last week.
You know who you are 🤩 🎉

Nothing changes, if nothing changes.

And you know what?
All it can take is small changes daily, creating new sleep habits and being consistent with them, 💥 then boom, it works!!!

Imagine going from bed-sharing or co-sleeping, and/or frequent night wakes to settle or feed…
To, a baby that sleeps through the night and is now consolidating naps.
In less than 7 days.

Been thinking of booking a consult but putting it off, thinking this phase will end soon?

Do you swaddle your baby?

Swaddling helps to mimic the safe and secure environment from the womb. It helps to minimise their startle reflex and keep them calm.

Do you find your un-swaddled baby wakes as soon as they are put down? Do their arms fling out and startle them awake, or they won’t settle for longer than a short sleep cycle?
Chances are, they would do 💯 percent better if they were swaddled for naps.

“But my baby HATES the swaddle”
👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻
Actually a baby doesn’t “hate” anything. It’s likely your baby is already overtired, so they appear to fight it.

Are they awake long enough or too long? Following awake times as closely as you can is key to ensuring they are ready for sleep and not overtired. Try calming and settling in your arms first, then lay down to swaddle, and then continue the settle.

Soon your baby will know that swaddling means it’s sleep time. It’s one of best non verbal sleep cues for babies.

Swaddling is recommended until your baby is rolling from tummy to back or vice versa.

My tip?

and, why it is so important?

Sleep Hygiene refers to healthy sleep habits, behaviours and environmental factors that are in place to help your baby have a good nights sleep.

It is important to establish a healthy sleep routine for your baby so they know it’s sleep time, will settle easier and sleep better. A regular sleep pattern ensures the release of hormones at the right time. Melatonin is the sleepy hormone, which tells our bodies when it’s time to sleep.

How?

⭐️keep a consistent nap and bedtime routine. The lead up to each nap and bedtime should be the same each day.

⭐️keep regular feed, sleep and awake times in-line with your babies age and needs

⭐️ make sure baby’s room is dark
enough to signal its sleep time

⭐️ make sure their room is calming, and at a comfortable temperature

⭐️ make sure noise disturbance is minimal. White noise can help with this.

⭐️ keep stimulation minimal and dim lights/close blinds in the lead up to bedtime
