FEEL GOOD FRIDAY 💫
A new life (and home) for Rodney!!
After having lived in residential aged care for over 8 years, Rodney has now transitioned into supported independent living (SIL) in the community and says that he is loving the positive impact the transition has had on his life and is very thankful for the NDIS & local providers for enabling it. It really was a team effort with many other providers playing a big part in supporting Rodney to achieve his goal.
Historically for many younger people living with a disability & unable to live in their own home, residential aged care was the only option. Now with the NDIS in full swing, many younger people have more options in terms of where they live with a big emphasis on supporting younger people to move out of aged care facilities into more age-appropriate housing. Rodney is thankful for the support he received whilst in residential care however is grateful for the opportunity to move into his own home & get back to doing the everyday things like his own cooking, laundry & even the dishes!
As OTs our role is to support clients to experience improved function & independence. We just love seeing clients like Rodney being able to re-engage in activities that give them purpose & fill their day (yes, even if one of those tasks is doing the dishes!).
Rodney says he is loving the added opportunities SIL is providing, especially the new garden that he is busy creating. Being an ex-farmer Rodney values being outside and getting his hands dirty & is loving being able to do this on a daily basis in his own backyard. Rodney says that he enjoys waking up each day to see what the day holds and is more connected to his friends & family as well as the broader community!
We would like to thank Rodney for giving us the opportunity to support him to move into SIL as well as enabling us to share his story. We hope that this story has shed light on the positive impact the NDIS can have on supporting people to live well – and we also hope it has given you some warm fuzzies at the same time!
