Autism Month is about raising awareness, acceptance and inclusion surrounding autism. More than 205,000 Australians are autistic and 1 in 4 Australians have a family member on the autism spectrum.

🌈 Gross motor skill development varies within the autism spectrum.
🌈 Recent research shows that a significant number of individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) experience musculoskeletal impairments and challenges in gross motor development.
🌈 Motor impairment is often one of the earliest indicators that a child might have concerns. These challenges can manifest as delays in achieving motor milestones, difficulties with coordination and balance, and differences in muscle tone.
🌈 However, it’s important to remember that each individual is unique, and while some may face gross motor difficulties, others might exhibit exceptional abilities.
🌈 Early intervention, personalised therapies, and tailored support can greatly assist in promoting motor skills and overall well-being.

Serial casting can be used to treat conditions causing stiffness, tight muscles and a reduced range of movement.

Conditions with reduced range of movement may include:
Cerebral Palsy
Muscular dystrophy
Idiopathic toe walking
Metatarsus adductus
Clubfoot
