The new book arrived… before the guru died he released a vastly simplified form of ashtanga aimed at those who find the regular practice too much.
A lot of people seem to have an unwarranted fear of ashtanga. A regular practice makes your body light, strong and healthy for life
It’s a little sad that most non-ashtanga yogis have a prelearned list of attacks, but I’ve yet to hear a single argument against the art of ashtanga that i respect. Generally I see it as trying to put yourself up by putting another down. Dissing something with power doesn’t make you powerful 😢
Anyway… time to study

Port Macquarie Ashtanga Yoga

I am very pleased to be holding ashtanga yoga classes at the times listed on the following schedule. Ashtanga yoga simultaneously develops flexibility, strength and balance by gently building internal heat. Continuous movement linked by breath while engaging internal locks makes this form of yoga one of the most effective in developing a powerful, youthful body at any age.
I was fortunate to be trained in the traditional ashtanga vinyasa method by world class ashtangi and received authorization directly from Guru Sharath-ji to teach the primary series. I’ve taught ashtanga daily in Japan from 2005 – 2023. However,as the traditional ashtanga studio can be both intimidating and demanding, the system of practice excludes many people due to age, injury, inflexibility etc. Also, pranayama (breathwork) is not taught until the advanced series.

And so, Port Macquarie Ashtanga Yoga should definitely NOT be considered a traditional Ashtanga studio.

Classes will allow the use of props and simplified variations of poses to allow virtually anybody to develop a personal practice. Movement between poses (vinyasa) is not necessary for those with serious stamina or mobility issues. The only two groups of people to whom I would recommend alternative forms of yoga would be those who have wrist injuries and those who suffer from heart conditions. Rather than a potentially competitive studio, my intention is to create a safe space to gently build one’s personal limits.

As shown on the schedule there are two led classes each day, an early morning mysore class and the opportunity to book a 90-minute class with me between 11 am to 4pm. If people are concerned about their level of ability, then I would strongly recommend booking a private class with me during the day (no extra charge) so I can gently teach the sequence until you feel comfortable joining the morning or evening led class.
Led classes will be at a much slower pace than traditional classes and students will be permitted to proceed using highly simplified versions of the more difficult asana (if necessary). At the conclusion of the morning led class, students have the option of joining me for a 25-minute pranayama.
The mysore classes are intended for students who have memorized the entire sequence. As it is a self-practice in silence (Mum and Dad are still asleep upstairs!!!), practitioners of any yoga tradition who have a personal practice but would like assistance with inversions and back bending are also welcome.

New students please confirm with me before attending

Hello everyone and welcome!
At the moment I’m very keen to get an understanding of the Port Macquarie ashtanga community in order to best service their needs.

So firstly, may I offer deep respect to Denis and Mandy. I haven’t reached out to them as yet, but I thank them for having established an ashtanga community in Port Macquarie. (Hope the name of this page isn’t too presumptuous)

My current idea is to give gentle led classes from 9am mondays, wednesdays and fridays, with an even slower led with explanations on saturdays.
However, a question to the experienced ashtangis. Would people be interested in a traditional early morning class? Even two people would be enough.
Love to you all,
Andrew
