AAC can look different for everyone, and so can the language we use to describe it.

Smartbox's Head of Content and Speech and Language Therapist, Daisy Clay, and Vice President and Speech and Language Pathologist , Shawna Johnson, have put together a clear, accessible guide to help you navigate common AAC terminology. It breaks down the different types of AAC, what they mean, and who they may be best suited for - all while recognising that every person’s preferences and identity matter.

To mark International Day of Persons with Disabilities last week, we headed out into the community and invited people to try communicating without their natural voice, using only an AAC device.

The conversations that followed, highlighted the importance of patience, understanding and the need and right for everyone to be heard.

Today, we’re sharing a message from Ellise - a non-speaking motivational speaker and AAC user who communicates using her Grid Pad with eye gaze. Ellise is passionate about disability inclusion and uses her platform to help others understand the importance of listening, asking, and recognising everyone’s right to be heard.

She recorded a short video for International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPWD), reflecting on what inclusion means to her.

🌍 On this International Day of Persons with Disability, we reflect on the theme: “Fostering disability inclusive societies for advancing social progress.”

Inclusion begins with recognising every person’s right to communicate, participate, and belong. For those who use Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC), access to communication is access to connection, autonomy, and dignity.

This day reminds us that building inclusive societies means embracing diverse ways of expressing, learning, and engaging, and ensuring that every voice is heard and respected.

Let’s continue to listen, learn, and act toward a world where difference is not just accepted, but valued.
