❓ What is a “standard item”?
🏠 A standard item is a regular household item that has not been changed or modified for a person’s disability.
❌ Standard items usually cannot be claimed using NDIS funds unless given special approval.
✅ Special approval for this in NDIS is called the “Replacement Supports Process”
🤔 But what happens when a standard item DOES help with a person’s disability impairment?
😶🌫️ This is where it can get “messy” and hard to understand.
🔄 The same item that may be “standard” in one situation, may be an essential support in another.
📉 Access to funding or spending then depends on the way items are assessed.
🤔 This feels consistently inconsistent (you never know what to expect!)
😕 This can leave participants and carers feeling confused about what is and isn’t covered.
💻 To learn more about how to work through this and using your NDIS funds, you can join our live ‘Can I STILL Buy It?’ peer workshop session on Thursday 30 April as part of our Resource Kit.
📂 It comes with some great handouts and checklists, the slides, the peer session recording, auto transcription and more practical tips and resources you can use.
