Monday Mythbusters 🧨 Concussion Edition
Concussions from sport alone account for 20% of hospital admissions in Australia.
Despite growing research, media awareness and consideration at all levels of sport Concussions remain poorly understood.
MYTHS:
❌You need to hit your head to have a consussion.
❌Rest is the best way to recover (think watching TV, reading, scrolling phone).
❌No immediate signs or symptoms means no concussion.
❌If you feel okay you can return to play
TRUTHS:
✅ Concussion can occur with a whiplash and no direct head trauma
✅ Return to Learn and Play protocols should be part of recovery. Graded approaches, not just rest.
✅ The cascade of neural changes can increase symptoms hours or days later.
✅ Many factors should be considered before a full return to play.
Due to primarily effecting the nervous system and brain these systems need to be assessed and rehabilitated for the following:
🧠 Cervical joint pain and limitation of motion
🧠 Visual disturbances or tracking issues
🧠 Balance or vertigo signs or symptoms.
🧠 Learning and Memory loss or changes
🧠 Coordination and mental task management
⛹️♂️Physical activity guidelines need to be set and monitored
🥗 Nutrition and supplementation should be considered also.
