Well that time went way too fast! I'm back in clinic today, and have reopened the booking portal for home visits at drdeborahcarrington.com.

The clinic appointment book has filled up, so if you are needing more urgent postnatal or breastfeeding help, please contact me for a home visit. If you are wanting a tongue tie release, Dr Greg Howe is also available and can usually see you quicker for the procedure.

I'll have limited availability next week as I have to travel to Melbourne for RACGP meetings, so please reach out soon if you think you'll need support. ❀

Are you due for a cervical screening test (CST)?

Active Health Portland are running a clinic lead by one of our female doctors to help make sure your cervical screening is up to date.

CST is also available via a self collect method which can be an option discussed at this appointment with the doctor.

Appointments are available the morning of the 6th October and all day on the 8th October.

Please call the clinic for more information and to book an appointment during this time.

R U Ok?

Here in the AHP waiting room, we have a table that highlights a new focus each month. This acts as a reminder to consider different aspects of our health and prompt discussions with our health providers, friends, family and community.

This month our table’s focus is R U Ok?
R U Ok day is the second Thursday of September every year to remind us all to ask those close to us and prompt deeper discussions about mental health.

Remember, R U Ok is any day and that’s why our September table will be visible all month as a clear reminder.

Keep an eye out for our October focus table.

I am taking some time off for the next three weeks to recharge my batteries, spend time with the kids and sort out my wild veggie garden. It will be nice to swap my đŸ©ș for đŸȘ for a bit. I will post pictures of my garden once it looks less feral. Please pray for some sunshine for me. đŸŒžđŸŒ±đŸ‘©â€đŸŒŸ

I have put pause on home visit bookings, but will reopen these when I return at the end of September. You can still call Active Health to book in for clinic appointments for after I return. If you think you'll need support or are due for a six week check, I would recommend booking early.

If you need a tongue tie release, Dr Greg Howe at Active Health Portland or Dr Zoe Baudinette at Seaview Medical in Warrnambool are trained in the procedure.

For breastfeeding support, you can seek support from:
- Warrnambool Breastfeeding Centre
- South West Healthcare Infant Feeding Clinic
- Care Lactation
- LCs at the Koroit branch of Port Fairy Medical
- Maternal and Child Health Services Portland and Surrounds

A little bit of heart health information from our own Dr Mattner:

Post- menopause, a women’s risk of heart disease significantly increases due to falling oestrogen levels which impact blood vessel function, lipid metabolism and fat distribution; leading to higher instances of high blood pressure, abnormal cholesterol levels and altered metabolism.
This increased risk, which often develops later in life for men, highlights the importance of monitoring heart health, adopting heart-healthy lifestyle changes and consulting with a doctor for personalised advice and risk assessments.

Today being women’s health week day 3 with the focus on heart health, it is an important reminder that screening and assessments help you and your care team make treatment decisions and foster early risk detection.

A little reminder from our own Dr. Farrell:

Dr Farrell highlights the topic of heart attacks in women and the differences in symptoms leading up to a heart attack.
- It may not present as the typical crushing chest pain that men can experience.
- Women with any type of chest pain should present to urgent care.
- Chest pain is not a symptom to wait to see your doctor about.

Menopause health assessments and heart health checks are offered here at Active Health Portland.

As explained by our registered nurse Bianca, menopause assessments allows your GP and nurse to establish appropriate care for your symptoms and includes thorough history taking and physical assessments to determine the best treatment for you.

Enhancing this further, your GP may also recommend a heart health check alongside your menopause assessment as fluctuating and changing hormones can affect the function of your cardiovascular system.

All information gathered allows your care team to provide the most effective and tailored advice for your circumstances and provides you with the information you need to make decisions to optimise your health.

Heart disease affects women in ways that are often overlooked – and it’s time we talked about it ❀

On Day 3 of Women’s Health Week, we’re shining a light on something that every woman deserves to know more about – their heart health.

Heart disease is one of the leading causes of death for women in Australia, but many women don’t know the signs of heart disease, or know that their risk increases at certain life stages.

That’s why today is all about empowering you to be 'Heart smart'!

Women’s Health Week - Day 2
Take the lead

Day 2 reminds women to ask questions and take control of their health. Discussing symptoms can be difficult and often, goes unaddressed for a long period of time due to fear.

Here at AHP, we want to encourage you to have those sometimes difficult conversations and ask those questions so appropriate care for your health can be arranged.
