Dr Deborah Carrington - South West Perinatal Home Visits

Dr Deborah Carrington - South West Perinatal Home Visits I am a Perinatal Rural Generalist GP and Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) in Portland Victoria. My training began in medical school at the University of Melbourne.

I work in clinic in Portland and provide home visits throughout South West Victoria for breastfeeding, sleep, settling, oral ties and more. After my hospital residency I decided to train as a rural general practitioner. In 2016, I was awarded the Richard Gutch Medal for achieving the highest scores in Victoria for the RACGP Fellowship Examinations. In addition to my general practice experience, I have completed formal studies in lactation with Australasian Lactation Courses, Lactation Education Resources and Possums Education. I have also completed a Diploma of Child Health through the University of Sydney. I am an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant and an NDC Accredited Practitioner. I have extensive training and experience in assessment and release of oral ties, including completing the IBCLC Masterclass: Oral Habilitation of the Breastfeeding Dyad.

I have a neurodiversity affirming approach and have a special passion for working with neurodivergent families, including ADHD prescribing and coaching. LGBTQI+ and non-binary patients are welcome and safe here. When I am not seeing patients, you will usually find me supervising and teaching general practice registrars. I work as a Senior Medical Educator for RACGP, supporting doctors training to be specialist General Practitioners. In 2024, I qualified as a Rural Generalist with RACGP and ACRRM. This was the first time that Breastfeeding Medicine was recognised as an Advanced Skill for Rural Generalism. I live on a rural property outside Portland with my husband and four children. When I am not at work I drink lots of tea, go for long bike rides and lose track of time in my enormous vegetable garden.

Geez, I am not having a good week. I got plowed into whilst sitting parked in a carpark this afternoon. The door is just hanging on. This may make home visits a bit more complicated whilst I deal with insurance and repairs. (I'm fine, just shaken up). I'll do my best to minimise disruption to anyone, I promise.

We have a new doctor! This is Dr Philippa Tepper, and we are so lucky to have her joining us in Portland. Philippa has previously worked in Portland Urgent Care, so you may recognise her. She is training to be a specialist Rural Generalist, which is a huge blessing to our community. Please say hello and help her feel welcome. 😊

Families often see me seeking help with their older baby's sleep, and my advice is never the same. Every baby has their own unique sleep needs, sensory preferences, medical background and personality. Every parent has their own unique values, beliefs and preferences around what 'good' sleep would look like for their family. If any professional or any program tells you 'your baby should' or 'you must', it can place unhelpful pressure on you to make changes that don't fit your family. You know your baby better than any sleep program, and any sleep advice needs to align with your values and emotions.

If I could had to pick one thing I would love to tell all expectant mothers before they give birth, it's that the 'latch' is not the first mouthful baby takes. It is a dynamic process, not a static one. This should be a gentle process, never forced or 'shoved'. It is magical when mums learn to recline back, switch on their baby's natural reflexes and gently support them to where the breast naturally falls.

Thanks to all your brilliant suggestions, there is now a free resource on my website for those starting out with a dairy and soy free diet. Please share if you have a person in your life who might find this helpful.

I have checked all of these products online for ingredients and allergens, but if you can see any errors, please let me know.

I haven't added gluten free as well, but it is on my to-do list!

Breastfeeding mothers may sometimes be advised to exclude dairy and soy from their diet if their baby has a suspected allergy (Cow Milk Protein Intolerance). Starting out can be a little overwhelming when you are already busy caring for a new baby.

I'm hoping you've had a gentle start to the new year. After a busy week of home visits, I spent today in the garden. Bliss.

I need your help, please! Have you gone on a dairy and soy free diet for your baby's allergies? I am putting together a 'starter' food guide for local mums to make it easier - I know it can be a big challenge when you are tired and already have a big mental load.

What were your 'go to' staples, like breads, wraps and snacks (especially decent chocolate). I would especially love some that can be easily bought in Portland or Hamilton. Which ones tasted good?

Thankyou! I will make this resource freely available when it's done.
