Meet Samir!!

Samir will be taking over the clinic whilst I’m away.

Samir Zarrouki is a skilled physiotherapist with a strong background in musculoskeletal rehabilitation and injury prevention. Holding a Doctor of Physiotherapy from Bond University and a bachelor’s in Exercise Science, he has developed expertise through work in hospitals, sports teams, and private clinics. His approach focuses on functional outcomes, strength-based rehab, and performance based goal setting.

Samir’s interests lie in bridging clinical rehab with athletic performance. With over a decade of experience as a strength and conditioning coach and martial arts instructor, he has trained athletes in kickboxing, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, and MMA across Canada and Australia. He is particularly passionate about helping combat sport athletes recover from injury, improve movement quality, and return to competition stronger than before.

Samir is a great fit and can accommodate for anyone’s needs.

Meet Lucy 💪

Lucy competed at the Backyard Battle in July — and absolutely crushed it.

She squatted 65kg, benched 47.5kg, and deadlifted a massive 100kg.

Lucy lives with functional generalised dystonia, a condition that affects her ability to walk, among other challenges. When she first came to me, she was understandably frustrated. She’d worked with health professionals before, but often felt the exercises prescribed were far too easy — and not reflective of her potential.

Feeling absolutely no pressure 😅, Lucy and I focused on what she could do, rather than what she couldn’t. Through some trial and error — and a few tears along the way — it became clear: Lucy was getting strong.

One day, I told her, “I think a 100kg deadlift is within reach.” I suggested she sign up for Backyard Battle. Her eyes lit up with determination, and she registered the following week.

Fast forward to comp day — watching Lucy walk onto the platform and absolutely destroy that 100kg deadlift was one of the most inspiring moments I’ve witnessed.

This is what resilience, strength, and belief look like. Go Lucy 🙌

Chronic pain can be debilitating and incredibly complicated to resolve.

But for the overwhelming majority of people, if they did not let the fear of pain stop them, or become a barrier for exercise, they would probably feel better.

A simplification of pain, is that it is a protector, not necessarily a sign of tissue damage, and it has the potential to ‘over protect’ when there is no real danger. This can be exacerbated by stress and emotions.

To be clear, I’m not encouraging you to push through pain, there is a guide I like people to follow that I’ll post in the coming weeks.

If you are an individual experiencing persistent pain, or are worried that you can’t start exercising because of your pain, please talk to a health professional.

Medical Imaging is amazing!

But it also highlights flaws, can create a sense of fragility, which then may become a barrier to exercise. Which is something everybody needs to do.

There are definitely exceptions to the rules I’ve outlined in this post but I think this is a good general guide.

If you think I missed something, please comment below !

I recently read the book 'Man's search for meaning' which was originally published in 1946 in German by Victor E Frankl a well published psychiatrist.

I won’t touch on the book, but when I read this quote I found it fascinating that a book that was written >76 years ago, is talking about how ‘modern medicine’ simplifies complex humans to machines.

Fast forward ~76 years, we are doing the same thing. My main problem with biomechanical zealot’s and practitioners that say people are ‘out of alignment’, is the unwavering dismissal of the complexity of pain.

Pain is a very individual human experience, which is influenced by so many factors, it’s probably impossible to list them all. Yes one of these factors is biomechanics.

Yes biomechanics are important, but no they are not the only factor.
Pain is NOT a good measure of the severity of an injury (ref previous video on pain), HURT does not mean HARM.

If you have not been asked about your recovery, stress & sleep, you are being treated as a machine.
