BIG WIN for Seniors

Showering, Dressing & More to be fully funded under the New Aged Care Changes!

Great news for older Australians and their families! The Federal Government has just made a major U-turn on the new Support at Home program, and it’s a massive win for dignity and the hip pocket of seniors

Originally, care items such as help with showering and getting dressed were going to cost seniors out-of-pocket expenses. However after hearing feedback from from the community and industry, the government has officially reclassified these items as "Clinical Care."

What does this mean for you?

It means the government will now pick up 100% of the bill for these essential daily tasks. No more "price tag anxiety" or choosing between a hot meal and a hot shower.

The "Zero Cost" List now includes:

- Showering & Bathing
- Dressing Assistance
- Continence Support
- Nursing & Wound Care
- Allied Healthcare

Who wants to joun us for a spectacular program at Taronga Zoo? This six week program for families living with dementia is run every Monday between 10am-12pm commencing on Monday May 4 2026.

Delivered by Taronga Zoo, this evidence based program offers participants exclusive access to restricted zoo areas with interactive animal experiences. This engaging and mentally stimulating 6 weeks has evidence supporting the improvement of quality of life indicators and we encourage the primary carer to attend with the individuals living with dementia.

✨ Were you born at St Luke’s Private Hospital? ✨

For generations, St Luke’s Care has been part of life’s most precious moments including welcoming new life into the world through the much loved maternity ward which ceased this service in 1969. Many in our community took their very first breath right here with us.

Today the maternity wards serve as a part of our residential aged care facility, Lulworth House and play an important role for our ageing community.

Today, while our services have evolved, our heart remains the same.

From our beginnings in 1919 as a boutique private hospital known for exceptional clinical care and warm, smiling faces… to becoming Australia’s first holistic campus for ageing, St Luke’s Care continues to support people through every stage of life.

Groundbreaking research confirms the impact of St Luke’s Care Community Programs for families living with dementia.

Since 2021, St Luke’s Care has been delivering unique six-week community programs designed to bring joy, connection and meaningful experiences to people living with dementia and their carers.

Thanks to funding from the St Luke’s Care Hospital Foundation, an independent evaluation was recently completed by the Research Group at the Wicking Dementia Research and Education Centre, University of Tasmania.

The research found the programs are delivering powerful outcomes, including:

- Increased social connection and participation
- Cognitive and mental stimulation
- Joy, laughter and positive emotions
- Greater confidence and sense of identity

Importantly, the study also identified a statistically significant improvement in participants’ quality of life after just one program term.

From the Taronga Zoo program to visits to the Art Gallery of NSW and the uplifting Memory Lane Choir, these experiences are helping families reconnect with community, culture and each other.

This research confirms what we see every week — community, creativity and connection can make a meaningful difference in the lives of people living with dementia and those who care for them.

Yesterday was an exciting day at St Luke’s Private Hospital as Dr Chow Chow from Sydney Pain Clinic successfully completed the first Infinion™ Pro spinal cord stimulation implant in New South Wales.

Developed by Boston Scientific, the Infinion Pro lead represents the latest innovation in spinal cord stimulation technology used to help patients living with severe and chronic pain. The procedure went very smoothly, and it was inspiring to see this new technology used clinically in NSW for the very first time.

We are proud that this important milestone took place at St Luke’s Care, reflecting the exceptional expertise of Dr Chow Chow and our highly skilled theatre team, and their shared commitment to delivering the best possible outcomes for patients.

This achievement also highlights the strong partnership between St Luke’s Care, leading surgeons, and global medical innovators like Boston Scientific, ensuring patients in our community have access to world-class treatment options.
