HIP BURSITIS? (Lateral Hip Pain)

The DO’s & DON’Ts You Need To Know

Outer hip pain that’s worse lying on your side?
Pain walking, climbing stairs or after sitting?
It might be hip bursitis (often now called gluteal tendinopathy).

Here’s what actually helps



✅ DO:

✔️ Sleep on your unaffected side
Pop a pillow between your knees to reduce compression through the painful hip.

✔️ Do targeted strengthening (NOT stretching)
Think asymmetric control work:

The goal = calm the tendon and rebuild strength.

✔️ Modify load (not stop moving)
Keep walking — but shorten distance if flared.

✔️ Consider short-term anti-inflammatories
If medically appropriate for you — speak to your GP or pharmacist.

✔️ Get assessed early
The longer you leave it, the more sensitive the tendon becomes.



❌ DON’T:

✖️ Don’t cross your legs
This compresses the irritated tissue.

✖️ Don’t stretch your glutes
Figure-4 stretches and deep pigeon poses often make it worse.

✖️ Don’t lie on the sore side
Even if it feels “not too bad” — it’s loading the irritated area all night.

✖️ Don’t ignore it for months
Chronic hip pain takes longer to settle.
