💗 Breastfeeding After Breast Cancer: What We Know

For women who have undergone breast cancer treatment, the question of whether they can safely chest feed can feel shrouded in uncertainty. Recent international research provides reassuring evidence: two large studies examined women who breastfed after breast cancer and found no increased health risk for mother or baby. These studies are the first to provide strong support for the safety of breastfeeding post-treatment.

According to the South Eastern Sydney Local Health District Lactation Group, breastfeeding after cancer treatment is safe as long as you are not taking certain anticancer medications. It is important to discuss any ongoing treatments with your oncologist before starting or continuing breastfeeding. Beyond nutrition and comfort, breastfeeding may also reduce the risk of cancer recurrence.

Surgery and radiation can alter breast tissue, which can impact which breast is able to produce milk. Women who have had a full mastectomy or a partial mastectomy with radiotherapy can breastfeed from the unaffected breast, and in some cases, from the treated side as well. Each situation is unique, and support from a lactation consultant or midwife can help navigate these challenges.

Every journey is different. If you are considering breastfeeding after breast cancer, consult your midwife, oncologist, or lactation consultant. Your health, your comfort, and your baby’s wellbeing are the priority. 💕

🎀 Supporting Women with Breast Cancer 🎀

How Chinese Medicine Can Help

Breast cancer treatment can be physically and emotionally challenging. While conventional treatments like surgery, and radiation are essential, Chinese Medicine and acupuncture can be powerful allies to support your body and mind throughout the journey.

✨ How Chinese Medicine Can Help:

Manage side effects: Acupuncture can reduce nausea, fatigue, pain, and neuropathy.

Support emotional wellbeing: Practices like acupuncture, qigong, and tai chi help ease stress, anxiety, and sleep difficulties.

Strengthen vitality: Chinese herbs and therapies work to tonify Qi (energy) and support immunity.

Aid recovery: Bodywork and acupuncture improve circulation, help with scar tissue mobility, and reduce swelling post-surgery.

Promote resilience: By balancing the body’s energy, Chinese Medicine supports overall health and may help create a strong foundation for recovery and wellbeing.

💖 Important: Chinese Medicine is complementary, not a replacement for conventional treatment. Always work with your oncologist and a qualified practitioner to ensure safe, coordinated care.

🌿 Combining conventional medicine with the holistic support of Chinese Medicine can help women feel more balanced, energised, and cared for during breast cancer treatment.

🌿 Fetal Positioning & Your Birth Journey 🌿

The way your baby rests in the womb can shape how labour unfolds. Babies are skilled at finding their way, but sometimes they need some extra space and encouragement to get into the most optimal position.

ℹ️ Fetal positions explained:

LOA (Left Occiput Anterior): Baby’s back to the left, chin tucked, facing mum’s spine (often considered optimal)

ROA (Right Occiput Anterior): Baby’s back to the right, also a good position for birth.

Posterior: Baby’s back to mum’s spine, sometimes “sunny-side up.” Labour may be longer or more intense.

Transverse: Baby lying sideways, vaginal birth not possible in this position.

Breech: Bottom or feet first. Vaginal birth may need special support.

✨ What is maternal positioning?
You can use your posture, movement and breath to create space in the pelvis, helping guide baby into a position that supports smoother labour.

✨ What if baby isn’t in an optimal position?
Labour can feel longer, more intense, or less effective. But there are gentle ways to help create space so babies can rotate and settle more comfortably.

🌸 What can we do at Nurtured Birth?
We offer therapies that support balance, space and ease:

Internal Pelvic Release (Physio): Mapping and gentle release of pelvic floor muscles can help you understand your pelvic space

Osteopathy: Hands-on therapy helps optimise positioning, support breech/posterior babies, and promote pelvic stability.

Induction/Birth Prep Massage: Rebozo and Spinning Babies® techniques gently jiggle and release tension, helping babies rotate and move deeper into the pelvis.

💫 Every birth is unique, but when women are supported to release and soften, babies often respond with movement toward birth.

There is infinite power in knowing our bodies, and holding onto the autonomy that comes with being informed.
Breast Cancer Awareness Month is one of those times we like to highlight the importance of education, prevention and awareness.

Breastfeeding can be such a tender, raw, and at times overwhelming role to take on. For some women it comes easily, for others it can be incredibly challenging and for many, it’s not an option at all. However you choose or are able to feed your baby, that care and nourishment is deeply valuable.

For those who do breastfeed, there is strong evidence to suggest that in addition to the myriad benefits for bub, breastfeeding can be a protective factor for breast cancer. During breastfeeding, many women experience a period of amenorrhea, when menstruation temporarily pauses. This absence of cyclical hormone exposure is thought to play a role in lowering the risk of breast cancer over time.

Lactation also brings changes within the breast itself. Breast tissue is constantly renewing during this period, removing older cells and encouraging differentiation of epithelial cells in preparation for milk production. This process makes the cells less vulnerable to DNA damage, creating a cellular environment that is thought to further reduce the risk of cancer.

In this way, breastfeeding is both a gift to your baby and a profound act of care for your own body. But whether your journey includes breastfeeding, bottle feeding, or a combination. It’s connection, nourishment, and care that matter most. The daily closeness and love you offer your baby are what shape wellbeing for years to come.

✨ International Babywearing Week: Woven With Love ✨

For thousands of years, families across the world have carried their babies close to their bodies. From woven cloths in Africa to rebozos in Mexico, from cradleboards of Native American peoples to the slings of Asia, babywearing has always been a way of life. It is both ancient and universal, passed from generation to generation as an act of care and survival.
When you wrap your baby safely against you, you are honouring this lineage of love and connection.

Studies show that babywearing helps bub regulate their breathing, digestion and temperature. It supports little muscles and hips to develop in healthy alignment. It can even ease restlessness, by offering the security of the familiar rhythm of your heartbeat - like carrying the comfort of the womb forward into the outside world.

For parents and caregivers, babywearing can reduce stress and increase bonding hormone oxytocin. It can help make feeding easier, build confidence, and strengthen your sense of connection to your child in everyday moments. There is something deeply grounding about holding them at your chest while you move, breathe, and go about your day together.

Having your hands free means you can prepare food, care for others and yourself, or simply move with more ease while your baby rests safely on your body. It's a gentle reminder that caring for yourself and your baby is an ongoing partnership that goes hand in hand.

This International Babywearing Week, we celebrate a practice truly woven with love. A practice that nurtures closeness, honours culture, and supports families in the early chapters of life.

For safety, guidance and inspiration, visit and learn how to make babywearing part of your journey.

🎀 Breast Cancer Awareness Month 🎀

October is a time to pause, reflect, and come together to honour those affected by breast cancer. It’s a reminder that knowing our bodies, understanding our risks, and taking action can truly save lives. Breast cancer touches so many, but with awareness, early detection, and support, hope shines through even the most challenging journeys.

💡 Did you know?

Regular mammograms and clinical exams can detect cancer before symptoms appear.

Self-awareness matters: noticing changes, lumps, dimpling, or unusual discharge, can help you seek help early.

Lifestyle choices like balanced nutrition, exercise, and limiting alcohol can support breast health.

💖 Supporting the journey:
Breast cancer affects not only those diagnosed but also their families and communities. This month, we honour survivors, stand with those undergoing treatment, and remember those we’ve lost.

✨ Simple steps you can take today:

☞ Schedule your screening.
☞ Perform regular self-checks.
☞ Educate yourself and loved ones about early warning signs.
☞ Support research and advocacy efforts.

Early detection saves lives. Awareness empowers us. Together, we nurture a community of hope, care, and knowledge. 💕
