💗 Breastfeeding After Breast Cancer: What We Know
For women who have undergone breast cancer treatment, the question of whether they can safely chest feed can feel shrouded in uncertainty. Recent international research provides reassuring evidence: two large studies examined women who breastfed after breast cancer and found no increased health risk for mother or baby. These studies are the first to provide strong support for the safety of breastfeeding post-treatment.
According to the South Eastern Sydney Local Health District Lactation Group, breastfeeding after cancer treatment is safe as long as you are not taking certain anticancer medications. It is important to discuss any ongoing treatments with your oncologist before starting or continuing breastfeeding. Beyond nutrition and comfort, breastfeeding may also reduce the risk of cancer recurrence.
Surgery and radiation can alter breast tissue, which can impact which breast is able to produce milk. Women who have had a full mastectomy or a partial mastectomy with radiotherapy can breastfeed from the unaffected breast, and in some cases, from the treated side as well. Each situation is unique, and support from a lactation consultant or midwife can help navigate these challenges.
Every journey is different. If you are considering breastfeeding after breast cancer, consult your midwife, oncologist, or lactation consultant. Your health, your comfort, and your baby’s wellbeing are the priority. 💕
