As I have been reading and learning about the trait of High Sensory processing sensitivity, I have noticed many connections with things that happen or are felt during early motherhood.

Like many other self-discoveries made when transitioning from maiden to mother, HSP was one for me. Motherhood breaks us open not only to transform and grow but also to reveal what was and has been there that we might not have seen clearly. We shed, and we evolve, and in doing all of this, there are wonderful things to discover through the hard work that all of that requires

I recently discovered I have the trait of high sensory sensitivity. It’s been a game changer in soooooo many wonderful ways. But probably the biggest one is that it has allowed me to truley find a dialogue of compassion with myself. A skill not so easy to master. Especially since becoming a mum.

So I’m going to be sharing a lot more about this trait. How it shows up for me as Georgie, mum, partner, friend, mumma and doula, but also how there is so much to be gained and learnt about supporting our senses in all the seasons of mother even if you do not have this trait.

Postpartum self-care is so important for one’s well-being. However, this term often also creates a lot of pressure and overwhelm regarding how one can incorporate it into one’s life as a new or seasoned parent.
Before kids, we often associate self-care with things that require more time, like massages, facials, a yoga class, or a bush walk with friends. However, if we try reframing and simplifying postpartum self-care, focusing on boosting JOY, we will find it feels a lot more doable.
Please have a little flick through here as I explain how and why.

Preparing for your postpartum is so much more than meal trains, some frozen meals and organising your partner to take some time off paid work. All of these are brilliant parts of a nurtured postpartum landing BUT, there is so much more to be explored, which would benefit you for the REST of your mothering!!! Not just the first year of parenthood.

Almost everything you prepare for (aside from the newborn bits) is transferable, reusable, needed and helpful in EVERY OTHER SEASON OF MOTHER that follows.

As a mumma myself, with lived experience of only doing two out of the three suggested preparations above, I also understand how easy it is to skip over postpartum preparation.

Now almost 6 years postpartum, I find myself referring back, implementing, reflecting and exploring all those things I skipped over.

Being mumma never ends. Postpartum is forever so giving it a little more time, attention and love is giving yourself and all your future selves the same attention and love they/you deserve

I recently started exploring the next big transitional phase and season of mother, which for me is perimenopause and as I did so, I really began to see how Postpartum Preparation really is soooo much more then just preparing to become a parent.

So much more then just planning for those first 6 weeks postpartum.

So much more then creating support and community for just the first year of parenthood

The things you prepare for in postpartum are things you will always be able to use in every crunchy, hectic, massive, joyful, wild, new, transition in life!

Here’s one for those who struggle to ask for help unless they have the opportunity to provide help in return.
I’m one of those types. 😁so I get it.

This idea is an easy way to provide support and help to others, whilst also receiving at the same time AND it requires almost no extra effort ( aside from action of swapping ) 😉😃

It can feel really disheartening and stressful when a bub struggles to settle with one parent and settles with ease with another.
This is totally common and is not a sign that you are doing anything wrong. It’s understandable natural for a bub to settle with ease with the birthing parent.
There are so many things that are already familiar with them as well as if the birthing parent is breastfeeding they are then also naturally getting a lot of bonding and connection time.

So to support partners with this here are a few ideas you may like to try to help practise and create more opportunities for bubs to feel familiar with partners smelling, voice and touch.

And always remind yourself that parenting is a practise that takes time and trial and error. Don’t let the fear of getting things a little ‘wrong’ stop you from trying. And remember to reframe any “mistake” you think you might have made into what they actually are… experiential parental learning 💜
