Why do house fires often start in the kitchen?

In this Episode 3 highlight of Outreach, Tim shares why the kitchen is one of the most common sources of house fires and how simple, everyday habits can quickly become dangerous.

From paper towels left too close to stovetops to candles or incense near curtains, small oversights can lead to serious consequences.

The good news is that most house fires are preventable.

Tim also highlights the importance of clear fire safety planning, especially for people with disabilities who may need additional support understanding alarms and emergency responses.

Assistive Technology: The Importance of After-sales Service & Support

In this Episode 3 highlight of Outreach, Hal Zhou from Able Living explains why the responsibility doesn’t end when the product leaves the store.

Assistive technology supports daily living, so when issues come up, providers and home care teams need to work together to resolve them quickly.

Sometimes it’s a simple adjustment or more training to get the most out of the equipment.

Either way, ongoing support is essential.

Why aged care/NDIS participants face greater danger in house fires

In this Episode 3 highlight of Outreach, Tim from the Country Fire Authority (CFA) Victoria breaks down the real risks.

Tim and the CFA help people be as proactive in preventing, detecting, and escaping house fires, which leads to better outcomes.

For people with limited mobility, those relying on assistive technology, or anyone who removes hearing aids at night, the ability to detect and respond quickly can be significantly reduced.

Got Aged Care or NDIS funding for Assistive Technology but not sure where to start? 🤔

In this highlight from Episode 3 of Outreach, Hal from Able Living shares one of the most important pieces of advice in assistive technology:
The right Case Manager or Support Coordinator can change your life.

This space is complex, with countless options, providers, and pathways. But having the right person guiding you can help you maximise your funding, make informed choices, and ultimately improve your quality of life.

Because it’s not just about having funding… it’s about knowing how to use it.

Have you had a great (or not-so-great) experience with a Case Manager Support Coordinator?

Vibrating smoke detectors for the hearing impaired 🚨

In this highlight from Episode 3 of Outreach, Tim from CFA Victoria highlights how inclusive technology is improving fire safety for people with hearing loss.

These specialised smoke alarms use vibrations and flashing strobe lights when smoke is detected to alert people with hearing loss, even while they’re asleep, so they receive the earliest possible warning.

Support is available through the Victorian Smoke Alarm Scheme, helping eligible Deaf and hard of hearing individuals access this life-saving equipment.

Applying is simple. Complete the short online form or contact Expression Audiology for alternative options:

What if assistive technology could come to you? Faster, easier, and stress-free

In this highlight from Episode 3 of the Outreach podcast/radio show, Hal from Able Living shares a game-changing approach: transforming ex-ambulance vehicles into fully equipped mobile showrooms.
Instead of spending hours setting up beds, recliners, and wheelchairs inside a client’s home, everything is ready to go, right there in the van.

A huge win for elderly Australians, NDIS participants, and the teams supporting them, making access to essential equipment quicker, smoother, and far less disruptive.

Would mobile showrooms like this make a difference for you or someone you support?

Reframing “Goals” in the NDIS and Disability Sector

Liz Wheeldon, Founder of CircleTalk, shares a fresh perspective on the use of the word “goals” within the NDIS/disability sector. She explains how traditional goal-setting language can sometimes feel triggering or overwhelming for participants, and why she has shifted to using “things you want to do” within the CircleTalk app.
