Great post about DSP for over 16 yr olds! 💜
Teenagers with Disability and the DSP - Mythbusters
(lots of great tips in the original post comments from everyone - worth reading - thanks everyone!)
When a child with significant disability turns 16, most of them will be able to claim for a Disability Support Pension (DSP).
1. Being at school full time doesn’t matter - if the disability (and other) criteria is met, full time school students ARE eligible for DSP
2. Parental income and assets don’t count – there is NO ASSETS/INCOME test on parents
It pains me to write these posts, but I keep hearing from parents of 18 year olds with disability who are NOT yet receiving the appropriate payments from Centrelink - they've missed out on two whole years of payments!
Before a child with disability turns 16, if you are receiving Carer Allowance and/or Carer Payment you will be sent paperwork from Centrelink that gives you the opportunity to reapply - this renewal will not happen automatically and if you don’t do the paperwork, you will be cut off.
Centrelink will NOT automatically send you the paperwork for your child to apply for DSP and the Pensioner Education Supplement either (which full time students are also eligible for!).
You’ll need to call Centrelink, go online or drop in to get the forms – you can do this several months before your child turns 16!
A few important tips.
- The forms are a b*tch, and demoralising – get some help if you can (you might even be able to make an appointment with a Centrelink Social worker – they're actually quite helpful!)
- If you can open a bank account (or two!) in your child’s name and get their Tax File Number (TFN) before they turn 15, your life will be much easier, trust me.
- When you child starts to receive the DSP, some of your Family Tax Benefits will likely stop or reduce.
What are your tips about applying for DSP for a teen?

pic desc: a boring stock illustration of four happy looking teens doing a selfie. One of them is seated in what looks like a sh*tty hospital wheelchair. I'm tired and don't have the energy to look for a better pic. I'm sure you'll all survive. :)
