The way you lace your shoes can solve foot problems you didn't know you had!

Wide feet? Skip the eyelets where your foot is widest. This creates extra room exactly where you need it without buying bigger shoes.

High arches causing pressure? Thread your laces straight up on each side instead of crossing over your arch. This reduces pressure over the highest part.

Heel slipping? Use the top eyelets to create loops, then thread your lace through the opposite loop before tying. Creates a secure heel hold.

Toe crowding? Start your lacing from the toe end and work up, keeping the toe area looser.

Parents, here's a game-changing tip for buying kids' shoes that actually fit properly.

Trace both of your child's feet on paper while they're standing with full weight. Take these tracings with you when shoe shopping.

Place the tracing inside any shoe you're considering. The tracing should fit completely with about 1cm extra space for growth.

Children's feet grow 1-2 sizes per year, so check fit every 3-4 months. Signs shoes are too small include red marks after wearing, complaints of sore feet, or damaged toenails.

No more guessing if shoes will fit! Your child's foot development depends on properly fitting shoes.

Looking for new work shoes? Here's what to look for:

✅ Firm heel counter (back of the shoe)
✅ Removable insole (for your custom orthotics!)
✅ Adequate toe room - no cramping
✅ Good arch support area

❌ Avoid: Completely flat soles, narrow toe boxes

Remember: Even the best shoes work better with custom orthotics designed for YOUR feet!

Before you buy your next pair of shoes, try the 'Liner Test' - it's what we use in our clinic to check proper fit.

Remove the shoe's inner liner or insole. This is the actual shape and size your foot needs to fit.

Stand on the liner with your full weight. Your foot should fit completely on the liner with about 1cm space beyond your longest toe. No overhang on the sides.

If your foot is bigger than the liner, the shoe is too small - regardless of what the size label says!

For width, pinch the shoe material at the widest part of your foot. You should be able to gather some material. If it's stretched tight, the shoe is too narrow.

This simple test will save you from uncomfortable shoes and foot problems!

About Sky Podiatry

Sky Podiatry was created by Samuel Cassidy who has a vision of creating a modern podiatry practice utilising the latest technology to achieve the best outcomes for his patients. Samuel has vast podiatry experience in a range of treatment areas and has been an AHPRA registered podiatrist since 2015. Samuel has extensive experience in sports podiatry where he worked with professional athletes in NSW to manage and rehabilitate sporting injuries. More recently he has focussed on providing high-quality podiatry services from foot care, diabetic foot care, biomechanical assessments, orthotic treatment and advice. His diverse experience and ability to work with patients of varying ages and backgrounds means that every patient at Sky Podiatry walks away with a spring in their step!
