Cooler days calling for stewed fruit 🍂

Stewing is a great way to maintain adequate fruit intake during the cooler months and also a great way to reduce food wastage - especially if you have an abundance of one thing or fruit close to going off. Not to mention stewed fruit is amazing for gut health (and an easy way to hide your kids probiotics in).

Fruits that are delicious when stewed:
🍂 Apples
🍂 Pears
🍂 Quince
🍂 Rhubarb
🍂 Stone fruit
🍂 Berries
🍂 Feijoa

Where possible keep added sugar to a minimum and replace with a sweetener such as honey and add spices such as cinnamon and ginger.

Did you know that there is only a short window in your menstrual cycle where you can fall pregnant, and for pregnancy to occur, you have to ovulate?

So, what is ovulation?
Simply put, ovulation is the process of a mature egg being released from the o***y.

After the release of the egg from the o***y, a hormone called progesterone peaks and remains high throughout the luteal phase of the menstrual cycle. Progesterone is important for fertility as it thickens the lining of the uterus to support egg implantation if fertilisation occurs and supports foetal development for the first trimester until the placenta takes over progesterone production. If we do not fall pregnant, progesterone drops and out menstrual cycle begins!

If you do not ovulate, pregnancy cannot occur!

~ folate vs folic acid.

Even though folate and folic acid are used interchangeably, did you know they are not exactly the same thing?

Folic acid is a synthetic version of folate found in fortified foods such as cereal, bread, whereas folate is found naturally in some foods such as avocado, dark leafy vegetables, sunflower seeds, eggs and whole grains.

Folic acid has to be converted in the body to its active form 5-MTHF, however, up to one third of the population has a genetic variation where folic acid is inefficiently converted, resulting in a build up of folic acid in the body.

This can have many health implications and affect fertility and pregnancy outcomes.

Folate has many roles in the body including:
~ formation of genetic material (DNA & RNA)
~ red blood cell formation
~ brain and nervous system function and health
~ development of brain and spinal cord in pregnancy
~ cell division

Some prenatal have folic acid, whereas others have the activated version 5-MTHF.
Talk to you health care practitioner about which one is the best fit for you.
