Thank you !

We’ve recently been doing workshops at Lowther Hall for their year 9 cohort, focusing primarily on using dance to regulate stress and empower us.

We’ve been so grateful for Lowther Hall’s continued support and hope that we can work together in the future as we continue to build our services.

Let’s try this again, shall we? 😏

Dancing is about connecting and communicating. But how often do we connect with others and allow ourselves to be vulnerable with them? How often do we communicate what we’re truly feeling inside?

Welcome to the Vulnerability Circle, where we intuitively choose a topic and share our experiences and thoughts verbally or artistically. This discussion is moderated by our director, , who will inform the group of the psychology behind our vulnerabilities and strategies we can use in our daily lives to help us progress into the best people we can be.

This will then channel into improv exercises, creativity exercises and choreography - depending on the journey the group wishes to take.

🗓️ Friday the 7th of July

⏰ 7-8:30pm

ALL AGES AND DANCE ABILITIES WELCOME!

This will be a donation based class; we understand that money can be a factor in taking classes, and we don’t want you to miss out! You do not have to donate, however the proceeds will be donated to a charity we choose as a group and that relates to our vulnerable topic. Posidance wants to give and give back where we can!

✨ DANCE TEACHERS, DANCE STUDIOS, FULL TIME SCHOOLS ✨

- Are you looking to build the mental resilience and overall wellbeing of your students?
- Are you hoping to provide students with the skills to ensure longevity in the industry?
- Are you looking to improve retention rates at your studio?
- Are you looking to provide professional development to your teachers to ensure they’re keeping up with educational research?

POSIDANCE ARE HERE TO HELP!

Start off Term 2 with a bang and provide your students with a Posidance Workshop.

With qualifications in psychology and education, our workshops combine mindfulness, psychology and improvisational techniques to set your students up for success - whatever that may mean to the individual.

By assisting students in finding their unique sense of identity and talent, we ensure that they are aware of the traditional focus of dance: to connect and communicate.

We also offer professional development for teachers to ensure that they’re delivering best practice according to current educational research.

Dance studios are a safe space for students outside of the pressures of their individual lives; make sure your teachers are helping students in the best ways they can ❤️

Check out www.posidance.com for more info, or contact us at posidance@gmail.com to book a workshop today!

Thank you so much to The Resilience Project and Prime Video Streaming Australia for inspiring this reel!

Switching our gratitude practice from “what are we grateful for” to “what went well for me today” increases longevity of the practice as well as tuning into the present more readily.

The science also shows that after a month of doing this, we actually rewire the negativity bias in our brain (check our previous post on this) to readily focusing on the positive. This will be shown in your reactions to stimuli as well; for example, getting frustrated in traffic may turn into “well what do I expect? It’s peak hour!”

As dancers, we focus so much on what we didn’t do rather than the things we do really well! Let’s change our perspective and use the things we do well to help improve upon our weaknesses!

✨ 30 DAY IMPROV CHALLENGE ✨
Day 30: Dance like no one is watching
Feat:

• Put on a fun song
• Just dance! No technique, no judgement

Dancing is fun. Period.

In a professional industry, we can forget that sometimes. I could ask any dancer why they started dancing or stuck with it and most, if not all, will answer because it’s fun or they enjoy it.

The mental and physical benefits of dance don’t come from perfect technique. Whilst achieving certain moves or accolades may make us feel good, these are often temporary. What’s lasting is our prolonged instigation of why we started dancing in the first place.

Give yourself permission to dance like a goof! See how good it feels! Round up your friends, your family, your dogs, and immerse yourselves in positive atmosphere. This is why we dance.

This is our last task for the challenge! Thank you to everyone that went through this journey and tried some of the tasking with us! We’ll be back to our regular posting until the next challenge!

✨ 30 DAY IMPROV CHALLENGE ✨
Day 29: Connecting with your body

• Find a mirror and start to focus your gaze on yourself
• Think about all the things your body does for you and show gratitude to the vessel that gets you through life
• Move your amazing body

This practice gives us the opportunity to connect with ourselves and to boost our self esteem.

How amazing are our bodies! These beings of energy allow us to travel, to move, to experience life to the fullest. Biologically as well, think about the heart that continuously pumps 5 litres of blood throughout your body, or your lungs that convert oxygen to carbon dioxide. What the body can do is incredible!

We spend a lot of our time judging our external selves for the way we look and act based on societal trends. Do we look the right way? Do we dance the right way? These negative thoughts can impact our health and wellbeing in a number of ways, and none of those thoughts touch on just how incredible we are as a whole.

Societal trends are just that; trends. A desired body shape one decade will be the wrong body type the next. A generation of dancers that prioritise technique will be forgotten by the generation that prioritise feeling and communication through movement.

Trends do not dictate you. You do that. So long as you are happy and healthy, that’s all that matters.

This practice also allows us to bond with ourselves. When we show our bodies tactile love, we release oxytocin, the “love” hormone, that automatically reduces stress and inflammation and floods us with positivity. A healthy mind for a healthy, beautiful body!

✨ 30 DAY IMPROV CHALLENGE ✨
Day 28 Connecting with your face

• Trace your face with your finger
• Recreate the trace with a pen and paper (eyes closed!)
• Move your body to the drawing to recreate the trace in a new light!

This practice gives us the opportunity to connect with ourselves whilst also incorporating more artistic forms of communication to extend our dancing.

Gratitude has been shown to improve both our mental and physical health in a number of ways. However, whilst we often find it easy to be grateful for the things we have, it can be harder to find reasons to be thankful for ourselves.

This practice gives us the opportunity to form a bond and connect with ourselves in a multitude of ways. Tracing our face and forming a tactile bond releases oxytocin, the “love” hormone, that is also released when we are grateful. As stated in the last task, drawing has multiple benefits including reducing stress and cortisol, which can also underline negative judgements and thoughts. And we all know how good it feels to dance!

Also, in moving to our outline, not only do we incorporate differing movement pathways, but we’re also inspiring movement from who we are. How wonderful is that!

✨ 30 DAY IMPROV CHALLENGE ✨
Day 27: Drawing then Improv

• Put on some music
• Start to draw to what you hear. It can be lines and swirls or a picture
• Move your body to the drawing rather than the music

This practice gives us the opportunity to challenge our senses and how they dictate our movement pathways.

Drawing in itself has been shown to improve communication skills, enhance creativity, improve cognition and understanding, and reduce stress. Music too does all of these things, in addition to lowering blood pressure and pain and increasing sleep quality.

As creatives, we are typically more inclined to artistic modes of communication. This practice allows us to combine different modes and find opportunities in communicating from stimuli. Challenging our brain while reaping the benefits of all 3 practices. Has to be the best medicine yet!

✨ 30 DAY IMPROV CHALLENGE ✨
Day 26: Daily Routine
Feat:

• Put on some music
• Think about what you typically do in a day
• Move your body and enact your routine

This practice gives us the opportunity to communicate through our dance and think mindfully about how our days are organised.

Whilst some of us may be completely averse to the notion of having routines and habits, our brain naturally craves them. Just like society, our brains want to be more efficient; work hard with using the least amount of energy as possible.

When we have daily routines, our brains have a little break. Less energy is needed to enact these routines because we’ve strengthened our synapses enough to just do it. It’s like a screensaver on your computer; it’s still doing all the work behind the scenes but with much less energy to do so.

When we don’t have habits or routines, we lose that rest period for our brain and it goes into overdrive. Those days where your routine has been skewed and you feel more tired are the days where your brain has had to use more energy to counter the unexpected stimuli in your environment.

So routines suck. But they’re also great. Plus, from a dancing perspective, we can use them to give rise to more movement qualities and pathways!
