What Happens in the Brain During Music Therapy?

Music therapy isn’t just soothing—it’s scientifically powerful. During a music therapy session, especially for individuals working to improve speech, multiple areas of the brain light up and work together in remarkable ways:

Broca’s Area: Activated during singing and vocal expression, this area supports speech production.

Wernicke’s Area: Helps process and understand lyrics and spoken language.

Auditory Cortex: Processes the sound and rhythm of music and speech.

Motor Cortex & Premotor Areas: Engaged when playing instruments or clapping along, reinforcing physical coordination needed for speaking.

Cerebellum: Keeps rhythm and timing in check, aiding smoother speech and motor control.

By engaging all these areas, music therapy creates new pathways in the brain, helping clients regain or improve speech abilities after stroke, brain injuries, or in developmental conditions like autism.

Music literally rewires the brain for healing.
At St. Rita Music Therapy, we witness this transformation every day.
