Last weekend I did a seminar on hormones and fat loss resistance in women for a Mother’s Day even at

The 3 key hormones involved are

1. Insulin
2. Cortisol
3. Thyroid Hormones (TSH, T3 and T4)

I discussed how these 3 are connected and how our diet, lifestyle and activity levels play major roles in the overproduction and underproduction of all 3.

In summary, insulin is a fat storage hormone produced by the pancreas when we consume too much carbohydrate and don’t exercise in proportion to that amount. Insulin builds up in the blood causing symptoms of fatigue, intense sugar cravings and fat loss resistance 🍩

Cortisol is our stress hormone and liberates insulin, it also puts our body in a sympathetic state (fight or flight) and contributes to our body’s instability to lose fat.

Our thyroid hormones are synthesised using key micronutrients including selenium, iodine, iron, vit D and tyrosine. When these are lacking or in excess in the diet our thyroid can under or over produce hormones and sometimes cause weight gain. This is due to the reduction in our Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR), or the calories/energy we expend at rest doing nothing! This makes it more difficult to lose weight. Weight gain due to the thyroid is roughly only 3-8kg and there are likely other contributors to this but it’s complex and requires more research.

* Zinc: oysters, sardines, spinach and pumpkin seeds

All the foods lately! 😍🧁🍉🍔🥦🍱🍍🌮🥑

Just a reminder that food is meant to be enjoyable. Yes we can use it as a tool to manipulate our body composition which is great but I don’t want that to be anyones whole life or for it to consume more time than necessary.

It’s also important to have this balance to maintain adherence to a diet plan or an exercise regime. Eating your meal prepped food every day shows great discipline however we’re not designed to be so rigid with our eating and typically our social lives or emotional state requires some deviance from the norm 🤪🫶🏼

GUT MICROBIOME 🦠

I think we know by now how important gut health is not just for comfort and living without pain but for our mental health, our physical health and general wellbeing. Gut health is at the centre of everything and is having a huge impact on our quality of life.

Now I love gut healing and talking about ways to improve our microbiome however, I think we need more awareness around the things that can cause this dysbiosis in the first place such as:

- Antibiotic use
- Alcohol consumption
- High levels of stress or consistent moderate stress over a long period of time
- Physical Inactivity
- Lack of food diversity
- Processed foods
- Low fibre diet (keto for one)

Now I’m not saying that if you’ve taken a round of antibiotics your gut will forever suffer. I’m more saying consistent long term use or necessary use for a cold you’ll recover from in a week can really add up and is going to kill off a lot of beneficial species. We can reinoculate of course but this takes time and money so prevention is always best!

Likewise don’t get stressed about how you always feel stressed just make sure you’re putting into place practices that can offset this stress and calm your digestive system whether that be meditation, journalling, exercise as stress relief or just some alone time.
