On behalf of the A Better Culture team, please accept our heartfelt thanks for your support over the past two years. As we bid farewell, we do so with deep appreciation and hope that our paths will cross again in the future.

Warm regards,
Jillann, Maddy, Komal & Sarah Jane

As the project concludes, we are hopeful that the work will continue to gain traction and serve as a valuable resource for advocacy, policy development and training.

While the project staff formally conclude their roles today, our CEO Jillann will continue with RACMA in the interim to help secure the next phase of support so that this work is not lost.

Going forward, all project-related communication can be directed to ceo@abetterculture.com.au

'Cultural Safety: From Compliance to Commitment' Report Now Available
We are excited to announce that the last of our reports has now been released and is available to read via our website.

https://abetterculture.org.au/news-resources/cultural-safety/

The report outlines how to improve the cultural safety of healthcare workers, using an embedded approach, rather than relying on stand-alone training packages. It also outlines cultural governance principles and explores how lateral violence occurs in the industry.

We call on those in positions of leadership and influence to consider the recommendations contained in the report and take meaningful action that supports First Nations healthcare professionals to thrive.

Following the recent release of the consolidated report, A Pathway to Better, we are pleased to now share the final Curriculum framework, developed by the Curriculum Design Working Group. The curriculum outlines clear outcomes for Learners, Trainers, and Organisational Leadership across Levels 1–3, and is structured around the AMC medical school curriculum domains: Practitioner, Professional and Leader, Health Advocate, and Scientist and Scholar. We invite you to take a look at the full curriculum report, including preamble, gap analysis, resources and assessment via our website and share with your networks. https://abetterculture.org.au/news-resources/curriculum/

New Report Available - The Pathway to 'Better'
We are excited to announce the release of one of our major outputs, "The Pathway to 'Better'", which outlines the key reflections and recommendations for action emerging from our working groups. The report is the result of extensive consultation and collaboration, including from individuals and organisations from across the healthcare sector, spanning different specialties, career stages, and diverse cultural backgrounds.

Please take a look via our website and share widely with your networks - with your help the report will act as a catalyst for continued advocacy and action to improve the workplace culture of our healthcare organisations. https://abetterculture.org.au/news-resources/consolidated-wg-report/

This year’s Reconciliation Week theme reflects the need to consider the past, while striving to reduce inequity in the present, to allow for a better future for First Nations people in Australia 🖤💛❤️

Reconciliation week is inspiring us at A Better Culture to focus on unity and action around anti-racism, truth telling and cultural safety in healthcare, with our report based on the Cultural Safety Working Group’s insights, with recommendations for employers, managers and anti-racist allies, due for release in June. Stay in the loop via our website for updates.

We are excited to announce a new repository of workplace culture initiatives on our website based on an environmental scan conducted by the project team.

These have been collated throughout 2023-2025 and include some resources outside healthcare and the Australian context. They are grouped under the 5 categories of our working groups - cultural safety, leadership diversity, individual level interventions and reporting pathways, workplace behaviour expectations and curriculum design - and can be filtered by other attributes such as resource type.

This International Women’s Day, A Better Culture is reflecting on the theme “Accelerate Action” to call for real change to improve gender equity, highlighted by a quote from Dr Sarah Jane Springer and a window into the differing experiences of medical trainees by gender according to the MTS.

This year's results from the MBA's Medical Training Survey highlight the the need for a sustained commitment to improving workplace culture. Notably, this year's survey included a question around sexual harassment, which shows while rates are lower than other types of negative behaviours, women and non-binary trainees are much more likely to experience it as opposed to male trainees. Additionally, there is a marked difference in rates of BHDR between trainees who are marginalised (by their gender or race) and those who are not - shown above. More detailed data will be available via the "Create your own report" page on the MTS website from early next year.

We all have our strengths, how do we maximise them at work? Take a read through our post to unpack what a strengths-based approach to feedback is and how it differs to traditional 360-feedback. There is also an interesting link between this approach and our Leadership Diversity Working Group.

The Human Rights Commission have published the first part of the National Anti-Racism Framework: Voices of First Nations Peoples. The HRC announced the National Anti-Racism Framework in late 2021, due to the high prevalence of racism in Australian society and need for a greater commitment to inclusion, equality and social cohesion. The first publication as part of this framework was published on November 1st, titled “An Anti-Racism Framework: Voices of First Nations Peoples”. This has links to our project, particularly shown in the health sector consultation section. To check out the full document, see https://tinyurl.com/yvvx7ajt
