🌿A healthy garden starts with healthy soil.
It is literally the basis of all good growing, and gaining an understanding of what that means and how you can easily do it at home, is invaluable to any grower and gardener in the making.

🍂Join me at to learn how to understand your soil at home, what having healthy soil looks, feels and smells like, composting and worm farming.

🪱Suitable for all skill levels.

Less than a year ago I began a journey of self employment. I was already working for myself in some capacity, but always kept a part time backup. But in the past 10 months it has been a solo path.
Being able to build my own business is a privilege and a big challenge, and I am still learning (and hopefully will forever learn).

One of the bigger challenges I have found was riding the waves of busy periods vs the quiet ones. The latter being tricky for me to navigate. Am I still productive when I am "not doing much"? Do I always need to be productive? What does rest look like when there are no definitions of time and outside obligations to frame it?

I am still learning how to ride these waves in the kindest and healthiest way towards myself. Learning to rest with less worry, to balance calm and concern, and to get a good mix of moment in the garden, tending to plants and grounding through being and presence.

What do you do to balance these waves?

Today's lesson is brought to you by colours 🌈

A relaxing day in the garden noting different colours, soaking some winter rays and allowing the senses to absorb your surroundings.
Move over ruminating thoughts, we're being present!

My bug-educated colleagues, what is this?
At first glance I actually thought it was lichen, but on closer look I saw these tiny pearl like eggs. We thought it must be a kind of moth, but are yet to determine which.
Was found on a melaluca tree in north-eastern suburbs of Melbourne.

Starting in 6 weeks!
And only 3 spots left in our little group of nature loving, garden curious, knowledge seeking, community minded folks.
I don't know the participants yet but I am excited to learn about their different aspirations, reasons for joining and what they will teach me in the process. Will you be one of those people?

What a wonderful way to spend the day.

Today at I had the pleasure of spending a couple of hours with carers group. We had the most glorious sunny day walking around the park, leaning about different plants, their uses and growing habbits, how to ammend your soil and prune your shrubs. We also gathered cutting to do some easy propagating.
I find it so meaningful to be able to support those who support others. It's wonderful seeing carers able to gather, chat and enjoy some time caring for themselves.

Weekend things

I had to go on some aggressive antibiotics course this week (both sadly, and grateful for accessible health care!)
I probably should have started these ferments earlier, but my life doesn't work well woth the 'should' schedule and I am happy to do it and to enjoy gut healing fermented garlic in honey and lacro-fermented cabbage.

I don't have fancy equipment or a label maker, so a chalk paint on the kitchen wall will help me remember when I made it, and to burp the jars in the first few day (I think 5 or so)

It was very simple, it was cheap, I made a bit of a mess, but now it is done and I am looking forward to the results.

As we bunker down during Warin, I am doing lots of prep and behind the scenes work for the end of the season. I am excited to say another round of Grounded is lined up already!

This is a small group, so if you think hanging out in an environment park, by the creek, socializing, creating and learning new things, is something you might want to do, go ahead and book your place.

Last round was so lovely I still feel the expansion, and so very much looking forward to returning.

🌼Ok, I'm clearly *slightly* obsessed with my tagetes lemmonii...
But how lovely and feels-brightening is it to see this literally glowing on a gloomy evening?

🌿Plants are sooo healing for us in so many ways!

❤️I know that for me a bright flush of colour makes my brain and heart feel better.
🧡Not in a solve-everything-magical-thinking kinda way. But in a lovely moment kind of way.
💛And if it makes me pause, breath deeper and smile, that is a wonderful moment.
💚One moment, then two, then maybe daily moments... slowly, gently building and feeling just a little bit better at a time.
💙That is how I view and practice therapeutic horticulture. Make it slow, make it gentle, make it accessible.
💜I truly love and believe in what I do. I feel it working for me, shifting my mindset, teaching me patience, helping me be less anxious. And knowing I can share this with others fills me with joy!
