Fat shaming is something that happens within everyday life, whether that be at home, with friends, on social media, within movies, at the doctors, even with your dietitian! Unfortunately, there is a weight stigma within society that has resulted in fat shaming to be way more common than not. Fat shaming has been proven NOT to work to assist people in developing a healthier lifestyle but has been shown to have the complete opposite effect. Although overweight and obesity is a global issue that can lead to other health problems, it is important that we address this in a non-destructive way. Being a dietitian, this is particularly important as there is a fine line between giving good, positive health advice and fat shaming. It is important as individuals and also health professionals to be sensitive when addressing weight concerns and promote body positivity, satisfaction at different sizes whilst taking into account different individual’s values, culture, medical history and lives overall. The goal in promoting health is to make people feel positive and empowered yet still want to make changes to improve their health. Don’t forget, you don’t know what someone is going through, so please don’t assume! At the end of the day, it is their body, not yours, so comments aren’t necessary unless asked for! If you have any questions, please let me know & please share this positive message around 😊.

Today, I was having a chat with my best friend and fellow dietitian .apd ! We got onto the topic of the relationship between diet, exercise and mental health issues. As an initial point of treatment, most suffering with depression will be prescribed an anti-depressant. Our question was, should diet and exercise be included in patient treatment plans for those suffering with depressive disorders? Can we avoid the pharmacological route by modifying lifestyle factors? I had a look around at the current evidence that is out there in regards to this which is summarised in this post. Conclusively, diet, exercise and lifestyle changes should be further studied and definitely considered when developing mental health plans! If you have any questions, please let me know 🤗 I have attached my references in the comments section, thanks guys!
