Monash FODMAP

Monash FODMAP For 20 years, this team has been innovating to improve the lives of those with IBS. Welcome to the Monash University Low FODMAP diet page.

The Monash FODMAP Team is composed of dietitians, scientists, and gastroenterologists working together to explore the role of FODMAPs in gastrointestinal conditions. The Low FODMAP diet was developed by researchers at Monash University. The team, led by Prof Peter Gibson & Dr Jane Muir, provided the first evidence that a Low FODMAP diet improves IBS symptoms. Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a co

mmon functional gastrointestinal disorder affecting one in seven adults in USA & Australia and is also common in Europe and many Asian countries. To help IBS sufferers, we have created a smartphone application to provide accurate information about foods that trigger IBS reactions. https://www.monashfodmap.com/ibs-central/i-have-ibs/get-the-app/

Lactose-free milk can be a great beverage option for those who are lactose intolerant or have IBS and are missing the taste of dairy foods.

Lactose is the sugar found in dairy products. For those who are lactose intolerant, they lack the enzyme, lactase, that helps break down this ‘dairy sugar’ in their gut. As the undigested lactose continues to sit in the intestinal tract and reaches the large intestine, it pulls water into the bowel and produces gas that could cause unpleasant gastrointestinal symptoms.

Lactose-free milk is made by adding lactase to the product during manufacturing, so it breaks down the lactose for you! As the lactose is broken down, lactose-free milk has a slightly sweeter taste than its lactose-containing counterpart. During this process, the amount of other nutrients found in milk is not altered, meaning that you can still get the same nutritional benefits from lactose-free milk as you would in regular milk. Dairy milk is a great source of protein and calcium, which are essential for supporting bone and muscle health. Other nutrients found in milk include vitamin A, Bs, D, phosphorus and potassium, which all play different roles in supporting our general wellbeing.
