Sunday love ✨

I love reflecting on parent feedback from the wonderful people I have had the privilege to teach, it feeds my soul.

It motivates me to continue to evolve professionally and personally, while providing the best quality childbirth education for our little Canberra community.

This special love note was so special to reflect back on - I adored teaching Nicole and Josh, who welcomed their little man Ezekiel into the world earlier this year 🥰

The absolutely devine has so kindly shared the birth and pregnancy journey of her little squish Ed

I was fortunate enough to take Holli and Josh through the positive birth program, which they were so incredible receptive to and empowered them both with the skills and knowledge to have a beautiful birth

I’m so proud to know Holli on a personal level, and just been such an honour to see her blossom into a Mumma ❤️

Holli gave birth at Wagga Wagga Base Hospital in rural NSW, under a continuity of care model with a student midwife

Use your BRAIN when making decisions ✨

I love teaching parents simple ways they can ensure they are receiving all of the information they need to make informed decisions

In Unit 3 of the Positive Birth Program, we discuss and apply the use of the BRAIN technique

I have received so much positive feedback from parents (birth partners in particular) on how this technique helped them to feel empowered in making tough decisions in the birth space

I’ve been slightly absent from socials lately my loves, it’s been a full on last few months .. As

✨ I’ve been nesting away in my new home, it’s been such a special time
✨ I’ve thrown myself into my Masters study this year, its been a balancing act, but how sweet it is to learn alongside some incredible women
✨ I’ve supported/am currently supporting 7 wonderful couples through the Positive Birth Program in a private capacity
✨ In between all of this, I have tried to make more of a conscious effort this year to slow down and honour what my souls needs - if I need to take a break, I do. If I need more, I create more

I hope you are all able to take some time to reflect on the changing seasons of life this weekend (and stay warm while doing so)

I was so fortunate to be able to support Ed’s super special parents, Holli & Josh, in the lead up to birth with private Hypnobirthing Positive Birth Program sessions

Holli & Josh were a dream to teach, taking ownership of their birth experience and refining their tool kit for birth - I couldn’t be prouder x

Happy International Nurses day 🤎

I am so proud to be a Nurse.

I am proud to work alongside and in partnership with some of the most driven, selfless, empathetic, compassionate and kind Nurses, who have worked tirelessly over the past 2 years up during some of the most unprecedented times.

Through staff shortages, burnout, fatigue and hunger for change.

I feel an immense sense of pride in knowing some of my closest friends are Nurses.

Through ever-changing PPE and government requirements, Nurses continue to provide holistic care to patients and their families.

We work in dynamic, unpredictable environments. Often facing physical and emotional trauma, abuse, and discrimination.

We do this because we care so deeply for the health and safety of our community.

We do this because we are Nurses. We are also mothers, daughters, sisters, aunties and friends.

Don’t forget to thank a Nurse in your life today and everyday, small acts of gratitude really do go a long way ✨

Happy IWD loves ✨

Today I took some time to reflect on how incredibly grateful I am to know and be surrounded by so many powerful women

I was born into a family of badass women, who stand in their knowing with grit and determination

I work alongside trial blazing women, who I am in awe of every single day for their kindness and compassion, even when faced with sexual harassment and sexism that still continues to exist. Comments like ‘oh they let women drive the ambulance?’ And ‘well I don’t know why they sent two women to help me’ are all too common

Since starting Rhythmic Birth, I have connected and networked with some incredible women owned businesses all over Australia, and felt the warmth of being apart of something really special

Over the past year I have witnessed the collect rise of women, particularly within the political space, tell their stories and hold space for others who so bravely do the same. It fills me with hope. And I am proud to play a small part of this movement by calling out behaviour that is sexist, and refusing to sit in silence any longer as to avoid confrontation. Reminding myself that the standard I walk past is the standard I accept for myself and those I love

I am proud, loud, messy, graceful, incomplete, complete. I am a woman 🤎

En caul brith ✨

Also referred to as a veiled birth, an en caul birth occur when baby, the umbilical cord and placenta enter the world contained within the amniotic sac or ‘caul’

Despite the incredible natural changes in pressure within the pelvis, uterus and cervix during labour, some amniotic sacs are able to withstand this pressure and not release as would normally be the case during a physiological birth

This phenomenally rare birth only occurs within approximately 1 in every 80,000 births in Australia

Practice surges ✨

As the birth of your babe draws closer, the muscles and ligaments of your uterus may begin to stretch and elongate in response to hormonal changes

Some women experience strong and incredibly painful practice surges, while others experience nothing at all

There are many known contributing factors that may induce practice surges, swipe to learn more about these

If at any point you start to become concerned about what you suspect is a practice surge, or if your surges are starting to become more regular and painful, never hesitate to seek advice from your midwife or other care providers

Kath’a Pregnancy & Birth Journey ✨

Lovely Kath has shared the pregnancy and birth journey of her sweet babe Eliza, who was born at Parkes Hospital in NSW via an emergency cesarean due to experiencing some distress and decreased movement

Kath touches on her experiences with fertility, and the joy she felt when she found out she was pregnant with Eliza after 18 months of trying to conceive. She shares her anxiety around wanting reassurance in the form of pregnancy symptoms to know that she was pregnant

Eliza was found to be in a breech position, and after attempting and an external cephalic version (ECV), Eliza was unable to be moved into the cephalic position and Kath was booked in for a caesarian section

An EVC is a procedure wherein a doctor externally attempts to moves baby from the breech position, into the cephalic position with head facing downwards toward the va**na. This is the optional position for va**nal delivery. The procedure can be very uncomfortable, and baby is continuously monitored throughout the procedure.

Thank you so much for sharing your story Kath x

Hindwaters & forewaters ✨

Did you know that during labour a Mama’s body will naturally navigate birth through the separation of the amniotic waters?

This separation happens in order to protect baby and the placenta, assist with effacement of the cervix, and equalise the pressure of the uterus during surges

The body is always trying to work with Muma’s to keep them safe and supported during labour ~ the more we learn about this incredible innate power, the more empowered we will feel in birthing our babes 🤎

Introducing: Resilience ~ a tea blend handcrafted by me to support Muma’s ✨

I have always loved incorporating nourishing tea blends into my health & wellness routine. Over the years I have found herbal tea as a huge comfort for various ailments such as gastrointestinal discomfort, endometriosis pain and headaches

Using beautiful organic herbs and flowers, I have mindfully created this blend to support the women I teach

Resilience blend contains:
🍂 raspberry leaf - known for its ability to strengthen uterine muscle fibres pre birth, and increase blood flow and the force of surges during labour, it is also rich in iron, calcium & potassium
🌹 rose petal - soothes an anxious mind, while reducing inflammation and improving digestion
🍃 peppermint - nourishes the digestive system and can help protect against indigestion, gas, and diarrhoea, while providing relief from tension related headaches

Enjoy a little Muma moment with 1-2 cups a day from 32 weeks gestation onwards

Membrane sweep ✨

Also known as a stretch and sweep, a membrane sweep is a relatively common intervention in Australia that is offered to women who are >40 weeks gestation in order to promote the onset of labour 🤰🏻

As with any intervention in the birth space, it is important to stay informed on how the procedure is performed, what to especially, as well as the risks and benefits

2022 ✨

Happy New Year to my loves ~ I hope you are all feeling well rested, with an open heart and mind

I want to express a huge amount of gratitude to everyone who has supported Rhythmic Birth so far. I completed my Hypnobirthing Australia training late last year looking for something to fill my cup and hold my passion. Choosing to honour and follow this passion has brought me more joy than I thought possible, and reignited parts of myself I had ignored for too long. Thank you beyond words to the beautiful ladies who have bravely shared their birth stories with me, privately and publicly. You inspire me to continue to advocate for change in the birth space. It is a huge honour to hold space for women, and provide a platform for education, the sharing of birth wisdom, and shared community.

2022 is going to be a huuuuge year for me. Beginning my Masters of Midwifery course while working full time, supporting some beautiful couples in their birthing journey, and continuing to provide evidence based education on this platform will keep me busy. Despite this I can honestly say I have never felt more aligned and clear in my purpose.

Sending huge love to you all ❤️

Festive season boundaries ✨

How is it almost almost Christmas time? Is it just me or does it feel like it’s come out of no where?

With restrictions easing and travel plans in place, it can be easy to fall into the trap of over-committing to social gatherings. This can be a particularly anxiety provoking time for Mama’s in our community who have spent a lot of time isolated from family and friends over the last 2 years

Honouring both yours and your babes boundaries during the festive season can be tricky to navigate - with well intentioned loved ones wanting to love on baby to make up for lost time. Every family dynamic is different, and it can be tricky to know how best to communicate your boundaries

Swipe for some simple but effective ways on how to manage festive season stress and check in with yourself, as well as some cues on when baby may need a break from socialising & ways to navigate boundary conversations

I hope everyone has a beautiful festive season, however you choose to spend it. Remember that you can say no whenever something doesn’t align with what your mind and body needs. Also remember to check in with vulnerable members your community during this time - a simple gesture of kindness can have a huge impact.

I’m looking forward to spending some time with my partner & family

Let’s hope 2022 is kinder

Love Sarah x

Delayed cord clamping ✨

Following on from my precious post about the incredible, life sustaining magic of the umbilical cord, I thought it was time I delve into the current evidence on delayed cord clamping

Delayed cord clamping is a practice supported by key bodies around the world such as the World Health Organisation (WHO)

I was quite surprised by the sheer amount of research out there on this topic, majority of which demonstrates the wonderful benefits it can have for baby’s iron stores, particularly at the 6 month post birth stage

Other less studied benefits for baby include
🤲🏼 reduced time spent in NICU
🤲🏼 increased red blood cell circulation
🤲🏼 reduced risk of cardiac haemorrhage
🤲🏼 reduced risk of enterocolitis (inflammation of the GI tract)

If you are interested in finding out more about delayed cord clamping and the benefits within the context of your particular circumstances, always speak to your care providers
