✨️ The ancient Stoics believed that true peace and tranquillity came from 𝙬𝙞𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙣, not from the external environment with all its triggers, conditions, attachments, delusions, and distractions.

🏛 A fundamental principle of 𝙎𝙩𝙤𝙞𝙘 𝙥𝙝𝙞𝙡𝙤𝙨𝙤𝙥𝙝𝙮 is understanding the difference between what you can and can't 𝙘𝙤𝙣𝙩𝙧𝙤𝙡 in life. While easier said than done, key concepts include surrender, letting go, and acceptance.

❓️So, HOW do we accept and surrender during times when we feel wronged, trapped in bad habits, procrastinate, resist, blame others or external circumstances for our thoughts, feelings, and actions?

💪 One way Stoicism can guide us is by encouraging us to observe 𝙉𝙖𝙩𝙪𝙧𝙚. Whether we like it or not, the universe and life are constantly changing, in flux, with 𝙨𝙚𝙖𝙨𝙤𝙣𝙨 and cycles.

🏛 Stoicism puts us in the driver's seat by applying Stoic wisdom daily, we can recognise that we too are part of Nature and we can learn to 𝙛𝙡𝙤𝙬 with the ever-changing, cyclical nature of life.

🏛 Stoic Philosopher Seneca reminds us: "𝙇𝙤𝙨𝙨 𝙞𝙨 𝙣𝙤𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙚𝙡𝙨𝙚 𝙗𝙪𝙩 𝙘𝙝𝙖𝙣𝙜𝙚, 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙘𝙝𝙖𝙣𝙜𝙚 𝙞𝙨 𝙉𝙖𝙩𝙪𝙧𝙚'𝙨 𝙙𝙚𝙡𝙞𝙜𝙝𝙩."

🧘‍♀️ In our Stoic Yoga classes this September, coinciding with the new season 𝙎𝙥𝙧𝙞𝙣𝙜 in the Southern Hemisphere, we are invited to examine the areas of our lives, minds, bodies, and habits that need "𝙨𝙥𝙧𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙘𝙡𝙚𝙖𝙣𝙞𝙣𝙜" with focus on cultivating deeper and longer 𝙚𝙭𝙝𝙖𝙡𝙚𝙨, allowing ourselves to 𝙚𝙭𝙘𝙝𝙖𝙣𝙜𝙚 the old for the new.

There is nothing to fear in releasing what no longer serves our well-being. Something new awaits to be received and experienced, but we must make room for it.

▶️ Try this little exercise regularly whenever you need to get back into the driver's seat, to reset or release: Take a deep breath in 1, 2, 3, 4, hold, now exhale longer, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, hold and repeat.

🌬 Out with the 𝙤𝙡𝙙, in with the 𝙣𝙚𝙬!
🌬 Only you can breathe for you!

🦋 Hello SPRING!! 🌼

🦋 To those inhabitants of the Southern Hemisphere of our planet, September marks the beginning of Spring. The butterfly and its 𝙢𝙚𝙩𝙖𝙢𝙤𝙧𝙥𝙝𝙤𝙨𝙞𝙨 are a perfect symbol for 𝙣𝙚𝙬 𝙗𝙚𝙜𝙞𝙣𝙣𝙞𝙣𝙜𝙨 and fresh starts as it emerges from its chrysalis, melting the winter cold of stagnation, darkness, and hibernation with warm hopes for change, growth, and regeneration.

🏛 Living in accordance with nature is a fundamental pillar of Stoic Philosophy. The ancient Stoics taught that the 𝙘𝙮𝙘𝙡𝙞𝙘𝙖𝙡 𝙣𝙖𝙩𝙪𝙧𝙚 𝙤𝙛 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙨𝙚𝙖𝙨𝙤𝙣𝙨 was a metaphor for life's constant changes.

🏛 Most importantly, they advocated that the point of power was always in the present moment, and all experiences were opportunities to act virtuously regardless of the seasons, phases and changes that unfolded in life.

Marcus Aurelius, a Stoic Philosopher, reminds us of the perfection of Nature and that Life itself is change, with his quote:

"𝙐𝙣𝙞𝙫𝙚𝙧𝙨𝙚, 𝙮𝙤𝙪𝙧 𝙝𝙖𝙧𝙢𝙤𝙣𝙮 𝙞𝙨 𝙢𝙮 𝙝𝙖𝙧𝙢𝙤𝙣𝙮: 𝙉𝙤𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙞𝙣 𝙮𝙤𝙪𝙧 𝙜𝙤𝙤𝙙 𝙩𝙞𝙢𝙚 𝙞𝙨 𝙩𝙤𝙤 𝙚𝙖𝙧𝙡𝙮 𝙤𝙧 𝙩𝙤𝙤 𝙡𝙖𝙩𝙚 𝙛𝙤𝙧 𝙢𝙚. 𝙉𝙖𝙩𝙪𝙧𝙚, 𝙖𝙡𝙡 𝙩𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙮𝙤𝙪𝙧 𝙨𝙚𝙖𝙨𝙤𝙣𝙨 𝙗𝙧𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙞𝙨 𝙛𝙧𝙪𝙞𝙩 𝙩𝙤 𝙢𝙚: 𝘼𝙡𝙡 𝙘𝙤𝙢𝙚𝙨 𝙛𝙧𝙤𝙢 𝙮𝙤𝙪, 𝙚𝙭𝙞𝙨𝙩𝙨 𝙞𝙣 𝙮𝙤𝙪, 𝙧𝙚𝙩𝙪𝙧𝙣𝙨 𝙩𝙤 𝙮𝙤𝙪."

🧘‍♀️ In Stoic Yoga, every lesson is a new beginning, a reset, a renewal and an opportunity for growth, metamorphosis, and 𝙩𝙧𝙖𝙣𝙨𝙛𝙤𝙧𝙢𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣.

💫“𝙀𝙫𝙚𝙧𝙮𝙤𝙣𝙚 𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙣𝙠𝙨 𝙤𝙛 𝙘𝙝𝙖𝙣𝙜𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙬𝙤𝙧𝙡𝙙, 𝙗𝙪𝙩 𝙣𝙤 𝙤𝙣𝙚 𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙣𝙠𝙨 𝙤𝙛 𝙘𝙝𝙖𝙣𝙜𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙝𝙞𝙢𝙨𝙚𝙡𝙛.” - 𝙇𝙚𝙤 𝙏𝙤𝙡𝙨𝙩𝙤𝙮

❔️I think this quote speaks for itself?

💫 How many of us hold grudges, grievances, unforgiveness, judgments, and criticisms of others? Their actions and reactions? And worst still, of ourselves?

💫 How many of us want others to change? Want the world to change? Want the external reality and circumstances to change so we can then change?

💫 What if that apology never comes? The explanation, reason, or excuse is not good enough, or never comes?

💫 What if you keep getting triggered and keep reacting because of others? Out there? Outside of you? Until they all change?

💫 What if that time never comes?

💫 The Stoics believed in focusing and controlling your own thoughts, words, actions, and reactions.

💫 What if you stopped looking outside and looked within and perhaps let your stillness, your humility, your courage to forgive or perhaps surrender, become the mirror for others to see their own reflection. Whether they can truly see or not? Does it matter anyway?

💫 In our Stoic Yoga classes, we are reminded to breathe, go within, focus on the task at hand, practice presence in easy and challenging postures, with attention on yourself and not comparing to others or what's out there but it is within, where the greatest power and peace lies. 𝙊𝙣𝙡𝙮 𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝙘𝙖𝙣 𝙗𝙧𝙚𝙖𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙛𝙤𝙧 𝙮𝙤𝙪.

💫 Let the rest be. They have their own conscience to deal with. You have yours. Focus on the one thing you can change, i.e, yourself. It is not easy, but try.

🌊 Like waves and the sun, that come and go, ebb and flow, rise and set, we are invited to remember the 𝙞𝙢𝙥𝙚𝙧𝙢𝙖𝙣𝙚𝙣𝙘𝙚 of life and our human experience.

🙏 The uncomfortable truth we all know but instead see as some inconvenient future event is that we too will eventually pass away.

🏛 The Stoics would use death and thoughts about our mortality as reminders to live with a sense of urgency and purpose by learning to prioritise the essential from the trivial and to focus on things of lasting value such as virtue, truth, and good character in all circumstances.

✨️ Marcus Aurelius, our favourite Stoic Philosopher, invites us to reflect on this impermanence and calls us to action to live with intention moment to moment. He does not say live perfectly, but rather with more purpose and bold resolve to seize the present in one of his quotes:
“𝙔𝙤𝙪𝙧 𝙙𝙖𝙮𝙨 𝙖𝙧𝙚 𝙣𝙪𝙢𝙗𝙚𝙧𝙚𝙙. 𝙐𝙨𝙚 𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙢 𝙩𝙤 𝙩𝙝𝙧𝙤𝙬 𝙤𝙥𝙚𝙣 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙬𝙞𝙣𝙙𝙤𝙬𝙨 𝙤𝙛 𝙮𝙤𝙪𝙧 𝙨𝙤𝙪𝙡 𝙩𝙤 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙨𝙪𝙣. 𝙄𝙛 𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝙙𝙤 𝙣𝙤𝙩, 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙨𝙪𝙣 𝙬𝙞𝙡𝙡 𝙨𝙤𝙤𝙣 𝙨𝙚𝙩, 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝙬𝙞𝙩𝙝 𝙞𝙩.”

🧘‍♀️ In our Stoic Yoga lessons, we are invited to ask these deeper questions throughout our practice by giving ourselves permission to reflect and let go of the things we may potentially be holding onto that no longer serve a purpose, hold us back or bring us joy in our minds, bodies and hearts.
𝙒𝙚 𝙖𝙧𝙚 𝙣𝙤𝙩 𝙝𝙚𝙧𝙚 𝙛𝙤𝙧𝙚𝙫𝙚𝙧. Let this be your daily reminder on how you choose to live out the remainder of your limited moments.

🤔 How often do you find yourself in a rush on most of your days? Heading in some direction to some place, some goal, some thing that needs to be done? Or someone you need to meet and talk to? Or some outstanding issue you need to resolve? Or a problem you have to solve?

😖 The things we need to 𝙙𝙤, 𝙗𝙚 𝙤𝙧 𝙝𝙖𝙫𝙚 in life are forever never-ending, leaving us in a state of perpetual unfinished business or with the ingrained need for constant external stimulation, distraction or validation.

🏛 Seneca, a Stoic philosopher, often wrote about the importance of virtue, presence, self-control, time-management and living in accordance with nature among other Stoic principles he covered in his writings.

His quote "𝙉𝙤𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙣𝙜, 𝙩𝙤 𝙢𝙮 𝙬𝙖𝙮 𝙤𝙛 𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙣𝙠𝙞𝙣𝙜, 𝙞𝙨 𝙖 𝙗𝙚𝙩𝙩𝙚𝙧 𝙥𝙧𝙤𝙤𝙛 𝙤𝙛 𝙖 𝙬𝙚𝙡𝙡-𝙤𝙧𝙙𝙚𝙧𝙚𝙙 𝙢𝙞𝙣𝙙 𝙩𝙝𝙖𝙣 𝙖 𝙢𝙖𝙣'𝙨 𝙖𝙗𝙞𝙡𝙞𝙩𝙮 𝙩𝙤 𝙨𝙩𝙤𝙥 𝙟𝙪𝙨𝙩 𝙬𝙝𝙚𝙧𝙚 𝙝𝙚 𝙞𝙨 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙥𝙖𝙨𝙨 𝙨𝙤𝙢𝙚 𝙩𝙞𝙢𝙚 𝙞𝙣 𝙝𝙞𝙨 𝙤𝙬𝙣 𝙘𝙤𝙢𝙥𝙖𝙣𝙮" aligns with these themes, suggesting that true wellbeing, mental/emotional strength and feeling contentment or that inner peace comes from within and not from external sources.

🧘‍♀️ In our 𝙎𝙩𝙤𝙞𝙘 𝙔𝙤𝙜𝙖 classes, students are invited to pause and inhabit the moment, their thoughts, their bodies and feelings, just where they are no matter how easy or difficult the practice. So whether it's in class or life, learning to give yourself 𝙥𝙚𝙧𝙢𝙞𝙨𝙨𝙞𝙤𝙣 to pause, slow down, be alone, surrender, or take the time to catch the beauty of the fleeting moments of life, are good signs of a well-𝘽𝙚𝙞𝙣𝙜 indeed.

💫 "𝙒𝙚 𝙖𝙧𝙚 𝙣𝙤𝙩 𝙝𝙚𝙧𝙚 𝙛𝙤𝙧𝙚𝙫𝙚𝙧" and "𝙗𝙚 𝙝𝙚𝙧𝙚 𝙣𝙤𝙬" are some of the cues I often say during my Stoic Yoga classes. Simple reminders that no matter what you are going through, good or bad, it too shall pass and that to be mindful and present can be easy if you just focus diligently and wholeheartedly on the task, thought, breath and move on hand. Nothing more. Nothing less.

⏳️ Whether physical aches and pains, emotional or mental strains, the passage of time will eventually wash them away.

💫 This is not to say that our current cares and concerns are not real or don't matter, they can be and feel very real, but it is ultimately up to us to control our estimations of them and how we direct our attention.

💪 Our Stoic friend and Philosopher 𝙈𝙖𝙧𝙘𝙪𝙨 𝘼𝙪𝙧𝙚𝙡𝙞𝙪𝙨 who is now immortalised in stone, myth and legend once traversed this earth plane too, and his footprints have now been washed away.

In his giant legacy, his memoir, "Meditations" he leaves us his private thoughts and now wisdom for us to stoically apply to our own daily transient lives.

"𝙀𝙫𝙚𝙧𝙮 𝙝𝙤𝙪𝙧 𝙗𝙚 𝙛𝙞𝙧𝙢𝙡𝙮 𝙧𝙚𝙨𝙤𝙡𝙫𝙚𝙙 𝙩𝙤 𝙖𝙘𝙘𝙤𝙢𝙥𝙡𝙞𝙨𝙝 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙬𝙤𝙧𝙠 𝙖𝙩 𝙝𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙬𝙞𝙩𝙝 𝙛𝙞𝙩𝙩𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙪𝙣𝙖𝙛𝙛𝙚𝙘𝙩𝙚𝙙 𝙙𝙞𝙜𝙣𝙞𝙩𝙮, 𝙜𝙤𝙤𝙙𝙬𝙞𝙡𝙡, 𝙛𝙧𝙚𝙚𝙙𝙤𝙢, 𝙟𝙪𝙨𝙩𝙞𝙘𝙚.
