Remember… 🩷

Even on the hard days… When you’re touched out, cried out, and doubting yourself…

When the house is a mess and you can’t remember the last time you ate a proper meal…

When the feeds feel constant, the naps are short, and your patience is running low…

Your baby doesn’t see the mess.
They don’t measure your worth by how much you got done.
To them, you are their safe place. Their comfort. Their home.

You are their whole world.

Take a deep breath, and know:
You are enough — just as you are 🩷

👋 Hello again — we’re so glad you’re here!

We’ve been a little quiet on here recently, and with some new faces around, we wanted to take a moment to reintroduce ourselves properly.

We’re Samantha & Catherine — registered midwives, nurses, and IBCLCs with over 10 years of experience each, and a shared passion for supporting families through the precious (and often overwhelming) postpartum journey.

We’re both mums ourselves — Catherine to two beautiful girls, and Sam recently to a little baby girl — so we deeply understand the pressure, the questions, and the emotional load that comes with new motherhood.

We know firsthand how confusing and emotional feeding your baby can be — especially when you’re getting five different opinions from five different people.
Conflicting advice is one of the most common struggles we see, and we’re here to help you tune out the noise and find what works best for you and your baby.

We offer home visits throughout Sydney and Telehealth Australia wide to support;
• Breastfeeding (latch & positioning, ni**le pain, supply concerns, weight issues, mastitis, weaning)
• Bottle feeding (refusal, bottle preference)
• Mixed feeding (tailored plans, paced feeding, pumping guidance, starting solids, return to work)

Our goal is to bring clarity, calm, and confidence to your feeding journey — no judgment, no pressure, just personalised care.

We’re so excited to reconnect and show up here again — sharing helpful tips, honest conversations, and real support as you navigate postpartum life.

If there’s anything you’d love to see more of, let us know below — we’re listening 👇🏻

She’s here 💫
Introducing little Indiana 🤍

Baby Indie arrived in mid-May, and since then I’ve been deep in the newborn bubble — soaking up every cuddle, every smile, and every tiny noise, while navigating postpartum life and the wild ride that is sleep deprivation.

I’m completely obsessed and so in love. It still feels so surreal.

Things have been quiet on here while I’ve taken some time to adjust, be present, and soak up this special time — and while Catherine has been holding down the fort, running our business and supporting our beautiful clients.

We’ll be back soon and can’t wait to share more with you 💕

I am SO excited to finally share that I’m expecting a new little member to join our MLSydney family in May 2025 👶🏼✨

Thankyou to everyone who has been so understanding and patient with me needing to reschedule appointments. I’ve been struggling with Hyperemesis Gravidarum (HG) (I’ll share some more on that soon) for the last 4 months, which left me unable to work.

I am slowly starting to feel a little bit more human and am back seeing clients in a reduced capacity. Catherine has kindly been holding the fort and has added in some extra availability.

The good news is, distraction is really normal, particularly from around 4 months of age.

Although normal, having a baby that gets distracted constantly throughout a feed can be frustrating and overwhelming for some mums, particularly when trying to feed in public.

Managing distraction is no easy task, and what works for one baby may not work for another (or even consistently for the same baby).

Our best tip is, to take the pressure off of having to have a “full feed”. Continue demand feeding and accept that those feeds when you’re in a new or high sensory environment are likely going to be shorter. Most babies during their ‘distracted era’ will have shorter feeds when out, and then will make up for it with longer, more frequent feeds when you’re home later in the day. As long as your baby has good output, is content and happy between feeds, and is gaining weight well, then their is no issue with this (they are just excited and stimulated learning about the world around them).

Some tips you can try to manage distraction are;
🫶🏻 Finding a quiet place, away from external distractions.
🫶🏻 Keep eye contact with your baby/engage with them during the feed (talking/singing to them).
🫶🏻 Try using a ‘breastfeeding necklace’ as a form of distraction to keep them busy during the feed.

✨Did You Know?✨

Babies use their hands to play an important role whilst breastfeeding 🤱🏼

We know it can be tempting to want to swaddle your baby for feeds, or to try and tuck those little arms down, but here is why we don’t recommend that;

- Babies actually use their hands to lightly stroke/massage the breast to help increase oxytocin levels and increase the flow of milk
- In the early days babies use their hands to familiarise themselves with the ni**le/breast.
- Some babies will use their hands to stimulate the ni**le to help it protrude ready for the feed.
- Having those little arms, or a swaddle tucked between you and your baby during a feed, can interfere with the depth and quality of the latch, and make optimal positioning more difficult.
- Having arms tucked down straight next to your baby’s body can be uncomfortable for them (particularly if they’re resisting it) and may cause more fussy behaviour at the breast during the feed.

💕 Aim to have your little ones arms in a big open hug around the breast, this will allow them to have one hand on top of the breast and one under the breast during the feed 💕

Did you know flanges aren't 'one size fits all'?

It's worth getting the right fit as it will reduce the discomfort of expressing and increase how much you can express. 🍼

YES! We absolutely believe that it’s important to prepare for your breastfeeding journey before your baby arrives.

Yes breastfeeding is natural, but that doesn’t mean that it always comes easily, especially when from the first feed, you are often bombarded with well-meaning but conflicting advice about the “right” way to breastfeed.

An antenatal breastfeeding consult can’t predict how your journey will unfold, or take away the conflicting information you’ll receive, but it can provide you with education, and like with anything – knowledge is power.

What did you find helpful in preparing for your breastfeeding journey? 👇

Reflux vs. Gastro-oesophageal Reflux Disease (GORD) - what is the difference?? This is a common point of confusion, and one that often ends in the unnecessary treatment of normal reflux in an otherwise well baby. Reflux is normal, all babies will have some degree of it at some point. Reflux occurs due to an immaturity in the gastro-oesophageal sphincter that results in a back flow of milk up/down the oesophagus, sometimes resulting in vomiting (like a leaky trap door). Most babies won’t be phased by this, even if they are ‘spewy’ babies. This only becomes a problem if the baby is distressed by this, if the baby isn’t gaining weight, or if the colour of the vomit is anything other than milky.

It is important to have a feed observed by IBCLC and other causes of GORD investigated before starting medication by your doctor

We are SO excited to share what we have been working on recently.
MLSydney has teamed with Clinical Psychologist Dr. Kate Renshall to create a Mindfulness Course for parents and babies, Mindful Bloom.

Mindful Bloom is a 6 week course, where primary caregivers can bring their baby (0-18 months) with them each week to learn a range of mindfulness skills as well as practical/emotional support and education. To create a safe/comfortable environment, groups will be small and intimate with a maximum of 6 parent-baby duos per course.

Our first course commences 5th May 2023.
