What if we told women the truth about birth?
We’d have to tell them that contractions will probably be more than “surges” or “sensations.”
That they’ll probably rock your world and leave you begging for salvation as you clutch the edge of the tub or the hospital linens.
That your gentle breathing exercises and your Spotify soundtrack will be left in the dust as you sweat and pant and sway and swear your way through it
That you’ll trip harder than any mushroom you ever did in college and vomit with the same ferocity and travel to places deep within yourself that you didn’t know existed.
That you’ll float above your body and simultaneously be trapped in it with an intensity you’ve never tasted.
And in that intensity,
in the sweating and the swearing
and the swaying and the vomiting
and the endless hours of contractions crashing down upon you ...
You’ll find your strength.
You’ll find a resilience you’ve never known.
You’ll find the power you need for the journey of Motherhood ahead.
In the messy humanity of it all,
you’ll find that you are holy.
A portal to the divine.
Capable of indescribable miracles.
A vessel of sacred life.
What if we told women the truth about birth?
We’d have to tell them they are capable of anything.
Worthy of being treated like goddesses.
Made to walk through the flames,
surf the tidal waves,
dive into the underworld
And come out alive.
Not unscathed.
Not unchanged.
But whole
and healed
and ready to take on the world.
If we told women the truth about birth,
we’d have to admit that we’ve lied about everything else,
and that they are more powerful,
more fierce,
more capable,
more beautiful,
than we’ve ever let on.
If we told the truth about birth?
We’d shatter the world.

No one ever warned her -

About how much she'd miss.
While doing the work that she loves.

And no one ever told her,

How hard it might feel,
Putting her dreams on pause,
To nurture her world in her lap.

And no one ever mentioned,

That loving her baby,
Might not always equal
'Loving every moment' of motherhood.

And no one ever admitted,

That mothers cry too.
When their world feels so new,
Just like their baby's does.

And because nobody told her,

She thought she couldn't say it.

So she instead spoke her secrets,
In every moment she was alone, but not.

In the quiet hours, she whispered,

Before this, I was someone else, and I miss her so very much.

In the lonely moments, she spoke,

I don't want to be anywhere else, but it's hard to not have a minute alone.

In the moments when everything else was on pause, she shared

Someday I'll get back to those other things I love; I can't wait to show you who else I am.

And in the moments when she was missing, she softly assured,

I love you so much, and though this is so very hard, I'll never regret a minute with you.

And as she told her story to her baby -

The one she thought she couldn't say,
She began to understand the truth about motherhood. The one that no one had told her:

That it is a complicated but lovely journey, full of moments of missing, but lifetimes of love. Where there is boundless happiness, but also some sorrow. And that it is always, always okay to feel both.

And she realized that there was nothing wrong with her story - Because although she hadn't heard one like it before, it was honest. And it was real.
And she was free, and she was happy.

And her baby was happy, too.
To be loved by a mother who had so much to share. But most of all, love.💜

A major cause of period pain, difficulty conceiving and digestive health issues in Chinese medicine is consuming cold foods.

Our bodies are designed to work best when warm. This means eating warm foods and keeping warm.

Your metabolism – the energy required for your body to function relies on this warmth.

Eating cold foods, being cold, not wearing clothes to cover your feet, back and low abdomen all contribute to reduced pelvic blood flow and pain.

Cold causes the body to constrict blood vessels and slow blood movement. When your period is due to start and this blood needs to move, it’s like the blood is ‘stuck’ and causes pain when it starts to move.

Consume warm or room temperature drinks and meals. Warming steamed foods, soups, stews, casseroles etc are essential to help your body and digestion particularly if you suffer menstrual issues, infertility and digestive issues or have had a baby and are still in the postnatal phase.
