My 2 bobs on ANZAC Day and the great points raised below.
I never had a public holiday on operations. It is not an earned “right” for every civilian across the nations of Australia and New Zealand. Be thankful, and don’t be a di****ad.
Don’t feel embarrassed to ask a servicewoman/man about their service, we’re happy to share - but not everyone will want to share everything - so don’t feel ignored, just respect their journey as it is.
Many find it tough to head out on ANZAC Day - or to wear their medals. There are all sorts of reasons why. And that’s ok - it’s their experience to hold close.
Many have mates who aren’t with us anymore through their combat service. But for too many, mates aren’t with us because of overwhelming internal demons: that hits the mates left behind the most. All parts of the services are touched by these tragedies, but it’s our Special Forces that suffer the most. And that’s why I do my best to look after as many of my SF mates as possible.
A touch on BRS. It’s a polarising issue for everyone - for a myriad of reasons. All service people have their opinion, a small few are intimately close, the significant majority have no idea. Just don’t bother brining it up - in my opinion it’s an issue too big to hassle diggers with on ANZAC Day.
Lastly, please honour Vietnam and contemporary vets: we need the recognition as the years go on - and we deserve it as much as anyone.
Lest we Forget.
Doc Sam.
