While nausea (and even vomiting) during early pregnancy is very common, in a small number of women these symptoms can be severe, ongoing and debilitating, leading to a diagnosis of Hyperemesis Gravidarum (HG). HG is under-diagnosed and often under-treated, and can have profound negative effects for the mother. For information regarding the safe use of medications to help with nausea and vomiting during pregnancy, please see our factsheet or call the MotherSafe hotline to speak to a counsellor for tailored advice.https://www.seslhd.health.nsw.gov.au/sites/default/files/groups/Royal_Hospital_for_Women/Mothersafe/documents/nauseavomofpregupdatenov21.pdf

OUR PEOPLE | “MotherSafe is a State-wide service where we take calls from consumers and healthcare professionals regarding concerns about exposures during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

By training I’m a paediatrician and I have an interest in birth defects and their prevention. I completed a two year fellowship in Toronto at a service that was similar to MotherSafe, so we modeled it on that.

I’ve seen an increase in women and health professional’s awareness of the need to plan pregnancies, so they can address concerns about potential medications before getting pregnant. Women with underlying medical problems who are often given quite scary advice about not taking medication might actually compromise their own health because they think it’s safer. That may not necessarily be the case. MotherSafe is all about making sure people understand that there are options and to seek advice so they can make informed choices ,” Debra Kennedy, Director, MotherSafe, Royal Hospital for Women.

We all know alcohol and pregnancy isn’t a winning cocktail and that alcohol can harm developing babies. For pregnant women or those actively trying to achieve a pregnancy, avoiding alcohol is the safest option. Whilst a few alcoholic drinks before you knew you were pregnant is unlikely to produce problems, heavy ongoing alcohol consumption is associated with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome, and stopping drinking at any time during pregnancy will reduce the risk to your baby. See our factsheet:http://www.seslhd.health.nsw.gov.au/Mothersafe/documents/AlcoholPregnancyFactsheet2014dk.pdf
